As a Canadian, can I run a Canadian Log book (13) hr's driving aproching the border?

If not, how many days running the U.S. rules do I need ?

U.S. rules are 10hr's drive, and 14 hr's, work, sleep. Min. 8hr's bunk consecutive... (I think ) ?

I normally get home every night, and never cross the border, so forgive my ignorance :oops:

11 hours driving within a 14 hour window, minimum 10 hours in the bunk. You need the prior 7 days logs at all times.

Quoting myself, :lol: Not the first time, ask my wife :wink:

10 hr's off duty, 8 consecutive in the bunk, 2 hr's (lunch, supper,) ?

I carry 14 days logs, but what I'm after is,... can I run 13 hr's driving up to the border ? Or am I over houred for U.S. ?

As long as you are in Canada you can run under Canadian rules, but as soon as you cross the border you will have to be in compliance with all of the USA HOS regs.

So there is no real way to answer your question about how many days etc. There are too many variables so it is something you will need to plan out every time as part of your trip plan to ensure you are in compliance.

My understanding is that you only need to comply with the US rules for the latest day. In other words, make sure you show the 10 hours off duty before starting your current day and obviously don't be over the 11 driving.

I've had the log books checked a few times entering the States and have had no violations even though I had done a 4/6 sleeper split two days before in one case.

You must also be in compliance with the 60/7 or 70/8 at all times in the U.S.

You could always hit up the US DOT to see what their "official" stance is. Get it in writing and keep it with you just in case a local yokel wants to read the law differently.

10 hours not working or driving ,any combination of sleeper berth or off duty consecutive hours. You do not need 8 consecutive hours in the sleeper berth. You do not need any hours in the sleeper berth.

As a part of the answer to your question.....which no one has really addressed....I think:

You can run on your Canadian HOS....even on the day that you cross the border, HOWEVER.....if you are even "one minute" past the 11th driving hour it would be in your best interest to NOT cross the border. If you did, you would immediately be out of compliance with US HOS. You would want to stop just shy of the border, take a 10 hr break, then cross the border and you would be able to continue on. If you are under the 11/14 US rule, you could cross and find somewhere to park before the end of the 11th driving hour or 14th total day rule.

Even though when I am in Canada I know that I can run under your rules, I always run under US rules....that way when I cross back to the US I don't have to worry about being out of compliance or in a gray area where the HOS are concerned.

While more than likely many US DOT Officers may be lenient and understanding where your HOS are concerned and might advise you to park it without issuing a citation.....it only takes one "junior-jack-booted-shavetail-nazi-rectumheaded-yahoo" to muck up your day. Discretion IS the better part of valor!! 8)
