How does it work? Are there anything else it does besides heat and air? And what does it cost?

Basic tv, internet connection, movie rentals (overpriced), in cab training videos if you want. The main thing is that it saves wear on the engine, which in my mind is the worst problem of idleing, it is cheaper than idleing. The last time I used it I think it was something like $2.15per hour.

Guess that all depends on your point of view and who is footing the bill.

I think they filed for a restructure....I was at the Wheeler Ridge Petro on Friday and the I.A. was open for business as usual.

I asked the guy if he was looking for work yet and he said that they have given no indication of front line employees being laid off at his I.A. He said he heard some of the upper management were gone, but that was it.

$4.80 gallon for diesel. 3/4 of a gallon per hour=$3.60 per hour. $2.15 per hour is less than $3.60.

My company won't pay for us to use it... Also, about 90% of the time we're in areas without IA anyway.

To answer the original question, it's supposed to provide heat and air, yes. But it also provies high speed internet access (you provide the computer and the cables), cable/satellite tv (you provide the tv and the cables) and long distance phone service. I'm not sure how any of those services work, since I've only ever used it to plug in my shore power to get a/c power, but that's the basic offering.

You pay by taking cash to the attendant (I think) or by providing cc info. I'm not sure how that works- I know you get an Idleaire card to slide and that card works sort of like a pre-paid calling card. You load money from your cc onto the Idleaire card and swipe the Idleaire card in the control unit (the big blob in the window).

I may be hazy or flat out wrong on some of the details- I'm sure someone else can confirm or correct. My husband takes care of the details on that- I'd rather park in the middle of nowhere. But it does save on fuel if it's hot out.

You don't need to give them a cc#, you get a card from them that you can load cash on via their cash machines at their little office trailer. I never bothered with the cable tv stuff, I just wanted cool air and internet.

The internet is provided via an ethernet port in the pod to hook your laptop to or wireless, which is somehow extra and I never tried. You will get full access to a T1 line at 150KB/s full duplex for 24 hours for about $2.95 (if I remember right). The pod resets after 24 hours and you have to restart it.

The biggest drawbacks are people smoking in their trucks while using it so you get a face full of ashtray smell when you hook up, the internet being shared with however many people are in the lot at the time, and people endlessly crying about how much they are entitled to the parking spots supposedly lost when IdleAire moved in. It's pathetic really, I turn my radio off to avoid it.
