9.75 MPG
Yes you read that right.
The tank after that? 9.23. In case your wondering if I overfilled, screwed up the math, or anything.
The last tank is probably around 8.2, since I haven't filled up yet.
Let me qualify:
Picked up a load 8000 lbs in Winnipeg to Wichita. 25 mph tailwind the whole way down.
When I got there, load offer for 7000 lbs back home. The wind also switched to a south wind. South Dakota was a bit windy, that's why my fuel mileage dropped. But it switched back to a south wind when I got into North Dakota all the way home.
It was a nice easy pulling trailer too. |

Yes you read that right.
What is the make and model of your truck also what is the engine and drive train?
I just finished a trip Omaha to Philadelphia, 5000lbs in the box. 7.5 mpg. 07 Classic XL, Cat engine Eaton 9spd.
I had similar results (I posted elsewhere in CAD) Pa to Richmond Va and return with 11,000lbs in the box and empty on the return.
It not your 9.75, but I figure for a "large car" even at the "light weight" 7.5mpg is pretty good.
I have checked the mileage at near gross weight and its consistantly in the mid to high 6's.
Im not bragging as Im not doing anything to really "conserve" fuel. But this is my 4th Classic and the other 3 didnt even come close to this ones fuel mileage. |

No problem drew:
Truck is a 1999 Volvo VNL770
425 Volvo engine
13 speed eaton
3.73 rears
Michelin XZA3 24.5 low profile steer tires
Michelin XDN2 24.5 low profile drive tires (terrible!)
All tires are run at 105 psi
I run full synthetic everywhere:
Esso XD-3 0w30 in the engine
Chevron Delo 50 in the tranny
Petro-Canada 75w90 in the rears
I wrapped up the exhaust manifold, definitely noticed an increase doing that. I should get pictures
Other things? Well I try to run a tight air gap, but it's very hard with these heavy nose trucks. I have aftermarket extenders like swift trucks do.
I also run 58 mph. 1300 rpms. Very gutless on the hills.

Even as an "Aero" truck....9.75mpg, really good.

Thats the big one right there....that probably does more for you mpg than anything else.
I may have to run a mpg check running 60mph in the Classic, just to see what the improvement would be. At 65, its turning about 1450rpm. 60 should be around 1300. Should be really close to 8mpg. Should do it just to say it can do it. |

Sure but the 9.75 won't be sustained. One time shot, hell might've even been variation. I've only touched 9 mpg maybe 3-4 times.
Another thing, I have a straight through muffler. I also recently ran an overhead, seemed to help quite a bit. |

Thats nothing to write home about. I hauled this super-secret load of ping pong balls one time and got 12mpg. Then the DOT wanted to see my load and they went everywhere. I refused to reload them and got 23mpg deadheading away from the scale!
On a serious note, 9+ is great mileage. That brings your fuel costs to around 50cpm, the same as it was for me about a year and 1/2 ago, when fuel was $2/gal cheaper :x Its amazing how you can save by not getting in it as much.
With fuel costs running in the neighborhood of 85cpm, you're giving yourself a 35cpm mile raise by going slower (and hauling lighter loads doesn't hurt). In layman's terms, a $350 raise for every 1000 miles. I'll PM my addres so we can split the savings. I take certified checks 8) |

Would love to see some pictures and of course always welcome advice on improving MPG. I am still at 7.5mpg day in and day out and would love to improve that. |
