| I am in a company truck with an '05 14L 470/515 hp detroit. I am experiencing an intermittant miss between 1100-1200 rpms. When it does this it also puffs heavy black smoke out of the exhaust, with every miss you will get puffs of smoke out the exhaust. It does this empty or loaded and is intermittent. The company shop has scanned it and it shows no codes. They are aware of the problem, but seem to have no clue. If anybody could give me some info on this it would be much appreciated. |

| EGR valve huh. What do you think, maybe it's plugged up? We were promised 7 mpg on these trucks and to date the best mileage I have gotten is 5.75 mpg. The truck has 261,431 miles if that matters. I believe the mileage would go down if the EGR was not working properly. |

i'm gonna guess fuel injector; i think egr position would set a fault code
does the turbo spool up when this happens ?
is your tech able to reproduce the condition while the vehicle is in the shop ?

No it doesn't

Not at this point, you know how those intermittent problems are, they never happen when the truck is in the shop.

Could you qualify that "no it doesn't" a little more?
Any changes in turbo performance during this "puff"? Does the boost gauge drop off? |

| I honestly didn't think to look at the boost gauge when it does this. I will look at the boost gauge the next time it happens and report back. Thanks so much for trying to help me out on this problem. Also what changes in turbo performance should I be looking for? |

My truck has been doing this too.
Keep an eye on your turbo boost, you'll more than likely see it dropping down then slowly coming back up to normal.
When you are climbing a hill does it occasionally 'cough'? If so, does the turbo boost drop and again slowly come back up?
I get my truck back from the shop this afternoon. Needed a new turbo.
Betcha you'll need one too. |

Worked on some S 60's with intermittent miss. pop the valve cover, check the wires to the injectors.. Some are known to break or chaffe on parts of the head and intermittently short out..
Valve cover gasket is reusable, if you own the truck could be a cheap fix.. If it's the company truck , the maint. dept might thank you..
Just a thought

Silverwulf,
My truck is doing the same thing, now that I have watched the boost gage. How many miles on your engine and was it covered under warranty? |

Nightrider1,
Thanks for the info. I will mention it to the shop and see what they say. Although, it sounds like I have the exact same problem as Silverwulf. |

check the crossover to the injectors, a common problem that causes exactly what you said |

230,000 miles, and yes it was all covered under warranty. |

| Problem turned out to be a leaking charge air cooler. I just wish they would have fixed it when I still had the truck. |

| Bad injector wiring harness. This will not show up on the fault codes and is a common problem with Detroit S60's. Same thing happened to me. That is my guess. |
