I picked up my pay settlement this morning and was pleasantly surprised to say the least. I had a load a couple weeks ago that had 8hrs detention (6hrs to be paid). Normally, you have to fight to get paid for your detention time, and when they finally do pay it, the pay range is $5-10 per hour. This check is different.

The detention paid me $140 per hour for 6 hours - total of $840 paid to me. Now, I'm almost positive that the payroll dept screwed up on that one. So, should I tell em or not?

If you don't, it could be considered fraud.

Don't say a word!! Consider it the bonus you WOULD have gotten IF you'd been honest!

Just kidding! Call 'em 1st thing! Someday, when the economy really tanks and they're laying off drivers, maybe they'll keep the HONEST ones!

Just a little addition to this load (from the settlement sheet):

When I got the paperwork at the office, it clearly stated that the rate was $525 for the load. On the settlement, it shows that it paid $400. I get paid 24.5% of the load.

Makes it tough to be honest when they're clearly lying to me.

it does make it hard when they say it pays one thing and you know it pays another, but keep in mind....what happens when they do a company payroll audit and they find the mistake. You going to have the money on hand to pay them back? Or how would you explain to a perspective employer that you got fired for NOT reporting it and they found out?

I am a firm believer in being honest. If it were me, I would call the payroll department and tell them first thing Monday morning. Being honest is not a matter of doing the right thing only when it is convenient. It is a matter of character. You never gain anything by being dishonest. Not bringing this obvious error to their attention is being dishonest.

Last year I received a check from a receiver from a load that I delivered to them. We always pick up a check from them when we deliver so I knew right away that they had made a mistake. I called them immediately and told them of their error. They didn't think that it was a mistake, but I sent the check back to them anyway. It would have been dishonest of me to have kept it. My reputation and character is worth more than any amount of money. To me it isn't a matter of whether I could get away with something. It is a matter of doing what is right. Sending the money back was the right thing to do.

So they are shorting you. I have two questions for you:

1. Do you think it is fair that they are shorting you?

2. If not, do you think the right avenue to show your dissatisfaction is to do pretty much the same thing they are?

Without a doubt, and without hesitation. Call payroll Monday morning to clear this up.....Nothing to add as all replies so far have hit the nail on the head (except one  ).

the extra money is probably the fuel surcharge, usually percentage drivers dont get part of that, in our case, we get 25% of the haul rate but not of the fuel charge. BUT it is clearly shown on the settlement sheet.

Ya - that's probably it - the fuel surcharge. Anyway, I'll call the company on Monday and explain it to them. Even though the extra money looks good in the bank account, it's not worth it.

reminds me of the time the driver got an extra 500 on his check and didnt say a word, about a month later they discovered it and took the 500 out, he went in the office screaming about the deduction, the boss said, look, when we accidently overpaid you, you never said a word, now you are in here complaining. the driver said,, well I'm willing to overlook ONE mistake..

The simple fact is they will discover their error. It may be weeks, it may be months, but believe it they will find it. Telling them ASAP is best because it's the right thing to do. It could also help you keep your job!

It's kinda like the time I went to the ATM, pulled a $20, and my receipt showed my balance was $3,500.00...pretty good since I knew I only had about $200 in there. The bank fixed it before the end of the day! There have been stories of people seeing erroneously placed funds in their accounts and withdrawing the money...the next thing they feel is the bracelets being placed firmly about their wrists.

I will say, this thread tells me that despite what we may see and read about in the media, most people are still upstanding, honest and decent.

As you say the company makes you fight for detention time and then if you finally get it they start you at $5 bucs (less than Min wage) per after a 2hour waiting period. That's like $2.50 per hour for the first 2hours.. And you feel guilty?
