IMO;
Cat engine? ... Cat filters.
Detroit engine? ... DDC filters.
Cummins engine? ... Fleetguard filters.
I am of the belief that if more filtration was required for the engine, it would be required by the manufacturer .... can't see them skipping out on something that they have to provide warranty on.
Any filtration problems I've ever encountered working as a technician were NOT related to lack of additional filtration, it's always an issue of not following the base recommendations for filtration. Eg - plugged filters from lack of maintenance, or misapplication of filters due to selecting the "cheap" filters off the shelf that "fit". |

Fleetguard is what I've been using, or the Kenworth dealer has been installing. I just want what's best, hence the question.
Thanks |

Yes, it's an 2001 C15. I've had it serviced at the KW dealer and they do have Cat filters, I guess I'll have to request them.
Thanks |

Basically they all meet the Manufacures Requirements and cannot force you to use a certian brand

While this is true I know that Cat will stand behind their filter if it causes an engine problem, where as if you put a Fleetgaurd or Wix on a Cat they (Cat) will NOT stand behind it.
And you DON'T have to use the manufacturers filter or anything else they sell. |

| I know for a fact that Caterpillar filters are not made by Wix. Cat owns a filter plant that is called AFSI. "Advanced Filtration Systems Inc" The best way I have seen to compare filters go get one of each and cut them apart and just see for yourself. Donaldson used to make some of their filters but WIX has never been involved with Cat's filters. |

Yes, I did a web search, and AFSI is owned by Cat partnered with Donaldson. About all they make, 92%, is Cat filters.
Also, Cummins now owns Fleetguard. |

I generally use Fleetguard and have found they are usually cheaper than comparable Wix or NAPA, and reputedly better.

Well, I put Cat filters on this last service. They were a little more but not that much...about $15/20 more for all 3 filters over the Fleetguards.
I did see a display compairing Cat filters to every other brand at the dealer.
They had them all cut open to show how their made. The Cat use a nylon center that the oil/fuel flows thru, The others all use a stamped tin center. Their thinking is " no chance of metal contamination w/nylon.
They also have nylon rings around the paper element to keep it spaced evenly so it won't bunch up, none of the other filters did this either.
There were other differance too, but overall IMO they were trying to make a better filter. |

Nylon center is also cheaper for them to make but of course they are not going to tell you that nor are they going to pass it on to you...as with all information consider the source and their motivations....
