Hi everyone,
I have a 2001 Volvo with a N-14 in it that is not wanting to start. I just bought this truck and have not done anything with it except drive it home and now that we are getting ready to use it we find this problem. When you turn the key to start it the first turn on the engine is real slow like the battery is dead but its not. Then after the first turn it gets faster and starts after about 6. Its hard to explain but when the engine is trying to turn over the first time its sounds like its not going to make it but it does and then gets faster.
The batteries are new and we replaced the cable going to the starter which was corroded and also cleaned all battery connections. Never owned a truck so we don't know if this is normal or not and any ideas would be appreciated. |

| Don't forget the connections on the ground side as well, some trucks use the frame rail & those connections get overlooked. A voltage drop check can vrify that as well if there's a voltmeter handy........ |

| The ground is something I didn't check except for on the batteries so I will look at it. Otherwise it sounds like maybe the starter. I really wasn't wanting that to be the problem :) |

There is a relay there, that could be corroded. |

I own a 2001 Volvo with the N14. Pull out the batteries and have them tested. With good batteries installed...and all !! connections cleaned put a meter across one battery and crank the engine....the meter will drop then stabilize if you drop below 10 volts you probably need a starter. My truck acted like yours and needed a starter. IT IS NOT EASY TO REPLACE..Easier with two people.
I can give more guidance if needed. When you are messing with battery connections and you end up with a cranking but not starting engine there is a 10 amp fuse in weather proof fuse holder on the left side of the engine on the wire harness running under the ECM.

| Thanks for the help. The ground goes straight to the starter so I cleaned that and it seems to be better. I will check the other idea's when I get a time. We have to go get a new trailer next week 380 miles away and don't wish to have it not start that far from home. |

That definitely sounds like a wiring problem, since you stated the batteries were new.
Mine did that because I was not tightening the battery post nuts periodically. One came loose, then the batteries wouldn't charge properly or get enough voltage to the starter during starting. |
