Ive got a gut who wants me to drive a tractor he just bought from WI to Miami. Can I do it with a bill of sale, and insurance or does it need plates of some sort??
Stupid question - I would just be bobtailing so I wouldnt have to stop at scales would I?

I think you will find a temporary tag has to be on the vehicle before it is driven off the lot.

As to stopping at scales. Some states require bobtail to enter the scales while others don't. I would recommend you enter the scales. Be sure you have all your ducks in a row.

You need a load behind that or it'll be one rough ride. Can I do it with a bill of sale, insurance, and plates?? Yup. Expect to go into all scale houses, particulalrly with a temp or transit "plate". BOL

if you bobtail past a scale in minnesota the officer will chase you down and make you go back for a full inspection, if you pass and are nice to him he wont give you a ticket, that was my experience.

You have to carefully read the signs before a scale house. Some will say trucks over "X" pounds must weigh, other will say all CMV's must weigh.

Make sure you know what the weight of the truck is. You can find the "curb" weight on the door jam sticker. This is the weight minus any fuel. Then add about 8 lbs per gallon of fuel and figure as if the tanks are full. (if you have no idea what size tanks you can assume a 300 gallon capacity or roughly 2400 lbs).

Curb Weight
The weight of the vehicle without passengers, driver or cargo, but with all standard features, a full tank of fuel, and all the fluids necessary for proper function.
