Just when I thought I was well on my way to becoming the consummate professional truck driver...

I HIT A DEER. :shock:

Could someone please write something to help me with this! :oops:
It came out of no where, and BAM, it happened. Now, I'm feeling a bit shaky and barfy, and I need some words of encouragement. And wisdom. Badly.

If cooked right venessin is quite tasty :) (Assuming it was a younger deer, older deer are just too tough) It happens to everyone, there is often not much you can do to avoid animals.

Advantage of pulling a reefer trailer. You can throw the deer in it and it will stay fresh until you get home :D .

And yes, it does happen to everyone. I'm sure that there is one with my name on it out there(already got one in a car).

I hit one last fall in my big truck, and I understand what you are talking about. Just gotta tell yourself that it isn't that big of a deal, and these things happen. Just don't try to make a habit out of it. :wink:

One of my best buddies hit a deer his first month in a truck.

Two months later he hit a FAMILY of them.

Three weeks later he hit another one.

All in a brand spankin new pete 387.

At that point whenever dispatch mentioned the words "pennsylvania" or "virginia" he used two words that started with F and Off.

no lady the deer hit you! he waited until he knew you couldn't swerve and jumped out. it's called deericide. :wink:

Hold the wheel straight, foot off the fuel, and hit it! Never try to avoid hitting one, you could be the one dead instead!

It happens to everyone, between my personal trucks, racecar trailer and big truck I have hit about 12. Now a Moose hitting the side of a 53' can be an interesting story also! Will try to find those pictures! The damage to the vehicle can be repaired!

We had one run between the truck and car trailer about 8 years ago on the way to a race in Odessa, TX - besides cleaning up the mess, it destroyed a fender, hood and windshield of our new racecar! Luckily a friend in Odessa had the parts, and it was an all nighter to get the car ready for the race!

That's it, right there. Never, ever, EVER swerve to avoid hitting a deer or any other animal.

As far as hitting one deer, you live in Iowa. Welcome to deer central. :) You're going to hit a lot more of them.

I have been very lucky and never hit a deer, though the number of close calls I have had I could not begin to tell you.

The worst deer "infestation" I ever encountered was going through the Black Hills in South Dakota. It was late at night and the wife and I lost count at 52 in about a 10 mile stretch, and those were just the ones we seen.

About your only real defense against a deer is to slow down if you know they are in the area. Remember if you see or hear about one there are probably several more, and the spring and fall/early winter are the worst times for deer.

I also agree 100% with everyone's advice to never swerve to avoid a deer. If you do two things can happen. First you can make things a lot worse, and 2nd you can turn a non preventable accident into a preventable one.

In a car, i've been hit by a deer twice. One of them actually actually got away and on his way out kicked out my headlight and bent the sheet metal.

In a truck, twice. One was very messy. The deer had already been grazed by somebody else and was lying prone across my lane and part of the other one. I saw the animal in time but there was traffic in the other lane and they wouldn't let me over. I slowed down to minimize the damage to the truck. Somehow, all of my right wheels went over what I think was the rump. My trainer and I found a blood smear almost the entire length of the trailer, and pieces of deer all the way back to back bumper on the trailer.

Do not EVER EVER swerve to avoid an animal.

Does that help you feel better?

Oh, BTW, if deer meat is properly prepared oooh baby. Tell me where and tell me when. Just don't tell my kids.

In my car, I've run into a couple...totalled my car out 18 months ago on a 10 point buck. :shock: Ran over Baby Bambi a few years back making a mad dash across the road...no damage to the pickup truck, but turned him into hamburger as he went up into the rear wheel well.

I've been actually run into by a couple of them, too. One put a dent in a fender...another in the door. Idiots. :roll: The german shephard dog that ran into my car a few years ago did the some major damage...$1600 worth. And nary a scratch on the dog.

I hit a pre-hit one about 10 years ago in a little Omni. Nothing I could do...it was in the middle of the road and I didn't see it until I topped the hill. By then, it was too late. Scraped that thing to the bone and took some bones, too. A few miles down the road, I was smelling roasted deer meat. When I pulled into the yard of a friend...who lived out on a farm...every farm cat from 10 miles around converged on my car. It was absolutely hilarious! They were fighting to get under the car and pull off the cooked meat. I'll never forget one little kitten trying to haul off a deer rib that was longer than it was. :)

Dang...I ain't never hit a deer..elk..or moose....but I did hit two racoons once..they were fighting in the middle of the lane, in the curve on hiway 16 at Gorst WA....years and years ago.

Oh yeah....I have them little glue on "cheap-o" deer whistles on all the trucks I have driven...since they started putting them out...they really do work.

I ran over a dead one on the highway in my 2 week old car. I had no choice but to run over it. I didn't want to cause an accident by swerving suddenly. So up and over I went. I got home, no damage, so I thought. The next day I thought I could smell that "dead smell" around my car. Looked under the car, couldn't see anything. The next day I could still smell something. I had my neighbor look under the car. Well, stuck in the under carriage was a piece of his leg. Then later found out the leg broke the emmissions box and had to get a new one, $400 to replace. :shock:

Those aren't 100%, all they do is emit a high frequency noise that people cannot hear, but the deers can (as well as many other animals)

I have only ever ran over 2 living animals and both in 4wheeler, one was a pitbull, I couldn't avoid it, going down a 2 way country road, car on the opposite side of the road, and quite a big ditch on the other, with no shoulder, just went thump thump, no damage, then the other was a skunk... that one obviously didn't do any damage to the vehicle... but it did leave a nasty f-u for quite a while in the form of a scent, and karma got me that day too on that one, about an hour after I hit it, I got a flat, was the tire that hit the skunk... wasn't nice :)
