I'm not really sure but I think if you're traveling over the border in a vehicle you just need 2 forms of ID. Driver's license and birth certificate will do. I only say this because my company recently checked to make sure that I could go into Canada and that I had 2 forms of ID. I think you need a passport if traveling by plane. I took freight to Canada once, Montreal. No thanks, never again 8) 8)

i've done a montreal run before and i hated it. i got yelled and cussed at in french, and all i could do was give the asshole a blank stare. i wanted to cuss at the smelly bastard as well. it's not my damn fault the qualcomm doesn't do special characters and that i had no idea there was more than 1 jaques peirre la(something) with that dash over the e. i don't mind going near or in toronto, though. one of my old world of warcraft guildmates lives there. also, the scandinavian ladies have it going on. :D :D

as of January 31 it changed to one form of ID and one prof of citizenship, like a birth cert. I guess there is some sort of card you can get also (besides a passport) that they will take. not sure if a copy of the Birth Cert will work, but have wouldn't think it would.

The answer is yes if traveling by air: you need a passport to return to the United States. The answer is no if crossing borders by land or sea. And then it gets whacky.

Recommendations made by the Department of Homeland Security's Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative caused passport rules to change in 2007: travelers now need passports if returning to the US by air from Canada and Mexico. DHS will be requiring passports from US citizens crossing Canadian and Mexican borders by land or sea in June, 2009, and will give 60 days notice before that requirement goes into effect. One of three things will happen before a legislated mandatory date of June 1, 2009 (issued by Congress in order to allow the Department of Homeland Security to make the change effectively and smoothly) arrives:

* The PASS card passport substitute will become available -- as of this writing, DHS says citizens may begin applying February 1, 2008
* High-tech driver's licenses may be introduced for border crossing purposes
* Teens under 19 may be allowed to continue crossing borders with only a birth certificate, as is currently possible (read more)

I would get a passport if you had the time. It's an easy form of ID and proves your citizenship without a doubt. It's good for 10yrs. and you can travel the world with it. I will be going to Canada this summer and everyone in my family has a passport. We are driving. I also use it as a form fo ID for domestic flights too, went to Chicago last summer.

Passport not required until june 2009 at the earliest.

I have a FAST card, and it is actually better then a passport. With a fast card, you do not need a passport.

I was asking because- they offered me this load going to ON ( I didn't have the hours anyway- but that got me thinking.

I don't carry a copy of my birth certificate here in truck#1

and only have one photo form of i.d.

So, when are trucking companies going to start telling their drivers---:"You must get a Passport" to continue to be qualified to drive for us?

If you read the article I posted you would see passport are required NOW if you travel by air. Which many of use. Sea and land in in June 2009. PASS are only good between United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.

If it was me I'd get the passport. If you only want to be able to cross over from Canada and Mexico then a PASS card would do.

As to when I doubt the majority of companies will require it. In all the years I drove I only had a few deliveries into Canada. And none into Mexico which I wouldn't go any way.

I just filled out the paperwork for my passport. I am not going to get caught in the rush of other people when it comes down to the wire for getting them. The lady at the post office said they have been coming back in 2-3 weeks but they tell you 4-6.
