Roadhog: Quite a dissertation on compliments. Great job!!! I've felt bad in the past because I've had drivers come by my truck and smile real big at me and often they'll say things on the c.b. to me. I usually comment on the c.b. but quite often I've been in a "mood" [not usually moody] but I haven't responded likewise with a smile and the poor guy's smile turned to a frown. I felt so bad-then it's too late to take back a "poor look", once you've projected it.
I compliment both males and females regularly particularly when I see drivers dressed professionally. I'm so used to seeing everyone in jeans and t-shirts that when someone has on dockers [i.e. males] with a nice shirt I always notice and say something. I always notice a nice female shirt since I get sick of what I wear at times. I always compliment them when I see them in really nice shirts, tank tops or other items that I like. I never hesitate to compliment females either because frankly I think we hear more complaints than we do compliments usually. Hence, I realize most people like compliments.
Certainly it isn't appropriate to just be complimenting to flirt. However, when you're not flirting and just wanting to compliiment the opposite sex I think it comes across as sincere. I've actually stopped drivers [male & female] to ask them where they've purchased a particular clothing item. Everyone likes to tell their story about clothing!!!
It's always nice to see a great smile also. Certainly, if we all "paid it forward" this would be a much nicer planet to be on!!! :) 8) |

| Yes, we should be a little nicer to each. A compliment to a complete stranger can go a long way. Saying something nice to someone may just may a rotten day better. |

Yes, compliments can help someone have a better day.
There is a fine line. Compliments are compliments. For an example.. "Those are nice boots." Nothing wrong with that. Men even tell men how nice their boots are.
Ladies, I wouldnt advise you to walk up to a man, and say, "You look really handsome in those Wranglers." That would not be good. :P That might get yall in trouble. |

I agree there is a fine line. I guess it's how you word it. Don't need to get into trouble, unless your looking for it and he really does look good in those Wranglers.  |

How about just saying thankyou when a guy who goes into a building before you holds the door open for you. If I go into a building and someone is behind me i will always hold the door, and for the most part guys will thankyou and girls won't. |

I always say thank you when someone hold the door for me. I am usually pushing the stroller, so I am grateful to people who do that. You would be surprised how many people have used another door and walked by while I struggled to get the stroller through the door.
It's just good manners to say 'thank you'. |

| I held the door for an older lady one time and in a loud voice she told me "I don't need you to hold a door open for me" My lovely and talented wife told her in a louder voice that "He doesn't know any better, He's a gentleman" |

One of the problems now days is-- I was holding a door open for a woman one time.. She said thankyou --her voice was sweet.. I said your welcome mame, to which she replied "I am not a woman" :?
She was a woman, though not the prettiest, none the less she was a she..
As for complements, I see nothing wrong with them. But sadly this day and age, you have to make sure that they are informed it is nothing more than a complement..
When I am told a complement, and I know not the person. I personaly tend to think that there is something more.. Is this because I am man, or is there some type of insecurity due to age or knowing I'm ugly. I don't know!
If I know the person, I take it for what it is... But then again, if someone is all over me, I can't see it--but the wife can. |

One good thing you can do is practice on a dog, because they mostly smile and wag their tail, and this will build your confidence.
But when you give a compliment to a person...
"ohhh yer sooo cute...yes you are...ohhh yes you are!"
might not have the same effect. ...just sayin' :? |

One thing that really bothers me in this day and age of feminism, is when a woman will almost feel offended when a man tries to do something nice for her. Men like to feel needed. I will always thank someone for holding the door for me. I will let my man help me fix things even though I can do it myself, because it makes him feel important. |

Did you try scratching her behind the ears when you say it? |

I confess I'm not much for giving compliments to either sex if I don't know them fairly well, as I don't wish to been seen as doing a "come on" or whatever, BUT I have witnessed my gorgeous daughter smile & flirt in ways that make ANY many a man, young or old, follow her & pant for more...she is happliy married with usually 2 kids in tow... I must confess it is fun to watch a master...LOL
But, on the other hand, if I do know the person, I will give compliments & flirt to a point. But, everyone knows where I stand. I like nothing better than to watch a man blush!
Matter of fact I managed to make our young dispatcher do same just before New Year's... I left for Yellowknife on the 28th, so knew I wouldn't see the group till after New Year's so I simply walked into the dispatch office & threw my arms around him, told him how nice he smelled (cause he has the most WONDERFUL cologne :D ) & wished him Happy New Year! The rest of the guys got a big laugh out of it...he blushed like a school girl! All in good fun! rest of them asked what is was like to be hugged up by a truck driver (I'm the one & only gal where I work)! He laughed & saide "thank God it was you"...pointing at me! |
