Against my better judgement, I wanted to ask-what is the appeal of NASCAR?

I see a lot of fans here. I have tried to watch the races on tv and just don't get it. I find it kind of boring, going around the same track very fast. That's just me.

I'm NOT trying to put the sport down. Alot of people here are into it. I hear them talk about this racer and that. I am, of course, clueless. I just want to know how it works and what makes it exciting. So I do have a clue.

Again, NOT trying to put it down, just trying to understand.

Everybody drives so people can connect with NASCAR fairly well. We've all wanted to go really fast but alas, the police keep us at bay usually. We've all wanted to pop the person in front of us who is going much slower than us or just cut us off but we can't do it without repercussions, these guys can.

Go to a race and it's much different than sitting at home trying to watch. You see so much more in person, the atmosphere is unbelievable.

it's man and machine in unison. Man trying to make his machine get around the 20 or so different tracks they visit 36 times a year faster than 42 other guys. It's speed, its danger, it's drama, it's
RACING!. It's like hockey..... you either love it or hate it.

I grew up in a racing family, racing myself untill i was 13. (go kart and Formula Vee) but it like saying what is the excitement of trying to beat another car off the line at a red light.

Thanks for the insight.

Now if 2 PO'd drivers would just get out of their cars and start pounding each other during a pit stop. That would be interesting.

Speaking of which, I like Bruton's idea of letting the drivers go at it after the race, (at least, reduce the fines for drivers in post race altercations) like the old days.

Which is why the IRL pretty much gave slap on the wrists for the incident at Watkins Glen this year between Hornish's people and I think a driver with Andretti-Green Racing.

Setup a boxing ring in the middle of the infield or on the frontstretch and let'em slug it out. Be a nice little postrace show but it will never happen with the high society CEO currently in charge. He has forgotten what made NASCAR great, the raw emotion.
