I'm trying to remember how I did this once with the built in diagnostic self test the '97 Volvo has. It's got a 370/435 Cummins and the engine light came on recently and wanted to stay on. I'd like to know why (none of the usual low fluids problems or anything too obvious so far). It's got a diagnostic button but so far doesn't seem to do anything except when the engine was off and key on it flashed a couple lights.

I ythink when you hold the button down the light will flash like flash flash flash space for a second or two flash flash that would be coad 32 then you have to get with Cummins and find out what that code means. This is the way my DD works maybe the Cummins is close to the same principle.

My DD 60 has a diag button. With the engine off and the key turned on I push the diag button once and it blinks a 2 digit code then a long pause and blinks the next 2 digit code. I have a list of all the codes.

de.t codes if needed
These codes are for your reference only. Please note: Codes 43, 44, and 45 are critical codes and if they are shown, the Stop Engine Light will come on which causes the engine protections to engage and your engine may shut down. All other codes will cause the Check Engine Light to come on which will not engage the engine protections and will allow the engine to continue running. If any of these codes are shown, please contact the nearest Detroit Diesel service center at (800) 924-4265.

celect engines will only flash fault codes if the fault is active - is the engine light on now?
