|
|
Well, I started to reply to one of the other threads, but I figured that I would just begin this one.
I was at my mom, and dad's this morning, and I was reading the newspaper. Kinda reminded me of the latest football threads that we reply to. Our local newspaper has a "Sound Off". It's more or less a "Letter to the Editor" in the sports section. Sometimes, it can get heated up. It's like a message board, in a way. Well, the head sports writer is Nick Gholson. He is a good writer, but some people think that he is biased to his Alma Mater, Wichita Falls High Shool. Around here, folks call Wichita Falls High, "Old High". For 50 some-odd years, Wichita Falls High was the only high school in Wichita Falls. We have 5 high schools, here. Two of them are private. One of the private schools is Notre Dame High School. Yes, they have the same fight song, and the same uniforms as the college.  Allthough, Notre Dame High School's mascot is the Knights. Myself, I went to WF Hirschi High School. Sometimes, Mr Gholson can make a story sound like Wichita Falls High really did well in whatever game it was. He sometimes takes a lot of heat from folks that write to him in the Sound Off.
Ok, here is where I get to the point of this thread. Mr Gholson has a column that is called, "In the Nick of Time". It is a short column that is usually just something he pulls out of his hat. :P Here is what I read this morning. It is also in the website, and I will post the link.

Jimmy Johnson had just one winning preseason in his five years as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
That was 1989. The Cowboys were 3-1 in the preseason, then went 1-15 when it counted.
So please don't read too much into this 2-0 record right now.
It's still August. It means nothing.
The cold, hard fact of the past 10 years is the Texas Rangers have won one more playoff game than the Cowboys.
The Rangers are 1-9. The Cowboys are 0-4.
So I'm not buying anything this team is selling in August.
Show me you can win in December. Then I'll pay attention.
Tom Landry's first Super Bowl champion in 1971 finished the regular season with seven straight wins. His next one, in 1977, rode into the postseason on a four-game win streak. Johnson's back-to-back Super Bowl winners of 1992 and 1993 ended their regular seasons 5-1 and 5-0.
Endurance has been an issue in Dallas. For some strange reason, the Cowboys have worn down at the end for the past 10 years.
Explain to me how a team can look so good in beating the Super Bowl champion Colts 21-14 last November and then six weeks later look so awful in losing to the Lions in December.
Those teams are a combined 15-29 in regular season games played after Dec. 1.
So who cares if the Cowboys win or lose tonight in Houston or next week in Minnesota? The real test begins in December - when they go on the road for three of their final four games.
- Nick Gholson
I bet ole Nick will catch some heat in the Sound Off from that writing. It is true though, about pre-season. People around here are already talking trash, because the Cowboys are kickin booty. Myself included. :P
Anyway, here is the link to our newspaper. You can also see the Sound Off in the sports section. Our paper's website sometimes makes you sign in on some of the stuff. Why, I dunno. :?

| I wouldn't put alot of stock in preseason games. It's more to try different schemes, players, etc... The real test is when they count. Can't personally say much about the Boys because I haven't really gotten into the NFL mode yet. I usually don't until the regular season starts. |

| He's right-Pre-season means nothing-All it is for is weeding out players and let's the 1st team play a quarter or so against a 1st team defense. |

| The Colts are 1-9 in the last two pre-seasons. They are 0-2 so far this preseason. Although they are kicking Detroits butt right now. :D Pre-season is meaningless. It's all about getting the roster down to 53 men. |
