After driving otr for years and seeing that drivers just cant get past worrying about losing their jobs long enough to make a stand. I dont believe it will ever happen until the industry finds a leader to bring them all together. And as far as a strike and or lockout ruining families well I believe that can be avoided. A strike doesn't just happen one day. I am a Teamster Driver and Know that most of my fellow drivers are smart enough to know that you need to prepare in certain ways. Like during the last year of a contract dont buy any new toys like a new pickup or Harley. And Maybe save up money and vacation time . But I have never worried about finding a job. I can walk a picket line and still make money. And any driver with a good driving record can easily find another job. Just my 2 cent.

I have always had the impression that if you are a union worker and on strike you can not work period, In my mind if I was a teamster and a brother went to work for another company and still walked the picket line he would be considered a scab, Solidarity and all that stuff, or maybe it is just for the company you are striking against. I don't know but it does not sound right to me....
I do agree with your game plan for the last year of your contract plan ahead....
The teamsters tried to get one of our terminals in Florida to vote them in, however all management had to say was that the union can not garentee business levels so if constrution is down then so is work and you still have to pay your dues, in other words management was ready to send business elsewhere before allowing a union takeover. Needless to say this terminal voted no to the union.
It Is What It Is

I dont believe I said that I would work for a for a non union company while on strike. No company can guarantee how much work they can provide union or non union. And as for sending work somewhere else some companies can do that and some cant. Most just make promises that they usually dont keep. My company for instance had for 4 terminals/plants in my immediate area that were nonunion. and they thought that they could fill our positions with those drivers if we went on strike. But much to their chagrin 3 out of those 4 plants went union. What actually did it for us was the false promises that the co. made and didn't keep. And when they sent them to our plants to load I would always have 1or2 drivers asking me about our wages, benefits, protections afford us thru our union representation. As far the old debate of what is best union or nonunion I worked nonunion jobs most of my life, but now that I have had the opportunity to work as a union driver I wouldn't want it anyother way. Ask any union worker most leave the union when they die or retire. Sorry for the long post.

I missed the part about the dues. But the truth is if you dont work in any given month you just go in to the union hall and get a withdrawl card. And until you go back to work you don't pay any dues. Like I siad ask a actual union worker about the union. If the company that you work for doesn't want to go union while would they give you any positive info about the union. Go to the source. If someone wanted info from me I will show you my check stubs and my benefit package. I don't have any reason to lie, it doesn't benefit me in any way if another driver is interested in getting a better job.

| And all the scabs continue to come up with their little excuses....Screw Bush, he loves to kill OTHER people's children as long as HE and that other lying POS Cheney are not uncomfortable...I am a Marine veteran/1968-1972 in case you "macho" posters (who have probably NEVER seen combat) want to keep waving that Bush flag....It's EASY to send someone else's child to die for yet another useless, undeclared war isn't it ? As long as YOU don't have to go....Let's see Cheney-"I had better things to do".....All of you have a real problem, namely lack of BALLS to stand up and say what you REALLY want. It's real easy to post on a bulletin board on the Internet, it's a lot harder to actually sacrifice to make something better. And personally I don't give a rat's ass if you don't like UPS, ship with those scabs over at FedEx. I don't think you would know what a decent job was if it hit you in the face at the trailer park.... |

| :x If mostof you, "so-call" truck drivers would LISTEN to "feederfred" you would be making a decent living, instead of driving around making,"NOTHING." Most of you, "so-call" drivers don't make enough money to buy a 3-liter coke each week. Why!! Because you just DO NOT understand. The ONLY way you will EVER be "real truckers" again, and start making the kind of money a trucker should make is, "let the TEAMSTERS handle EVERYTHING AGAIN!!!!!!! WISE UP, or you WILL continue to have NOTHING.. |

By the way, we have been on a shutdown since April 1st, we don't haul cheap freight. Since the 1st we have our people taking a crash course in truck service and customizing. Doing well with that also. When the shippers and brokers run out of cheap freight haulers, because they have lost the battle, we will be ready to haul once again, and get what we want. |

One of the biggest opponents of this so-called "Truckers Strike" has been the auto paint and body lobby.
If all truckers shut down for 24 hrs., business in their industry would drop off because none of the SWIFT trucks would be running over cars or backing into other trucks!! |
