so many mixed msg's from men about women in the biz, both Canadian and American.
There are a lot of men that think it is just great that I am driving a truck. They have no problem with it and respect me for my experience and knowledge. Heck, some even ask me for my opinion on problems or help. They see me as a driver, like themselves. So to them, I tip my hat!
BUT! There are also some that just can't handle a WOMAN doing the same job as them! To them; Get over it, it's the year 2007!
HEAR! HEAR! Been there done that!!
Ya know is REALLY strange...the company I haul for has been in business since 1946, and I am the FIRST woman they've ever had! But they are SUPER to me. I work just as hard as the guys, I run just as many miles (if not more LOL) & ALL the guys respect me for that! I have found for the 2 years that I have worked here, the guys tend to look out for me & feel very protective of me.. I find that incredibly FLATTERING. I am treated like a lady ALWAYS.
I think the funniest thing I ever heard was when some guy sees me pull up with my PURPLE long nosed Pete...You DRIVE that thing????... Na, I reply, I just sit behind the wheel & look pretty! ROFLMAO
Men are really too funny sometimes! |

Geez, I am not giving up that easy!
Lil story here. Dad drove tandem back yrs ago, i was about 4-5yrs old and I got up 4am to go to work with him, of course I didnt get to go but........I will never forget that day! The desire still burns within 40++yrs later.
I realize what I have to do to achieve my goal and have found a driver tr'g program which allows me to do it p/t. I realize it is a 24/7 committment.....and challenging, I look forward to it. I also realize what it takes and how it will affect me and my family. I am making a serious effort to plan each step in order to make it a smooth transition.
A motto I have always lived by...... "A GOAL WITHOUT A PLAN IS JUST A DREAM!" |

Your Mom's motto is too funny! I like that!
I hear ya Wildkat!
I like the one the other day when a man in a truck gets on the CB and says to me! Look! There's a woman driving that truck!
So I think to myself, like, what's the big deal? Some men just think it is so amazing. It is too funny sometimes. |

HAHAHA Hear that!
Y'kno I have one of those stories too...
My uncle...owned 6 trucks when I was young..like 2.. he lived with us, boarded in the basement. Used to come home from his stateside run. He was quite a ladies man back then (over 70 now) LOL Anyway, he told me this story when I was in my 30's...
Seems he was getting ready for a date & I came down stairs to see him (I was 2 remember), & he says I stepped all over his fresh polished boots with my bare feet & said to him "Uncle Jim, when I grow up I'm gonna drive a truck just like you!" Apparently he just patted me on the top of the head & something like "yeah sure, kid, have at 'er!"
The most interesting about this is...this particular uncle has VERY set ideas about women & their place in the world...barefoot, pregnant & definitely IN the kitchen LOL BUT, HE was & is the most proud of me & what I do! Go figger! |

I went into a truck dealer the other day. I'm looking to purchase a new truck. A Volvo, of course. Anyways, I started looking at a truck on the lot. I pulled the hood down and was looking at the engine and all around the outside of the truck. There were 2 guys a distance off and I could see them watching me while I was doing all this. They never even tried to approach me. That started my temper to rise. After about 10 minutes my hubby finally arrived. He had answered a call on his phone and had stayed by our personal truck until he was done. As soon as he came to where I was I could see both of the men starting towards us. I told my hubby what was what. Believe me he wasn't happy about how they were being. He said they weren't acting very professional or businesslike. I agreed. Anyways they came up to us and proceeded to extend their hands to shake my husband's hand. They asked if they could help him out in any way. Answer any questions, show him the inside of the truck, etc. he replied...."No, I'm not looking to buy anything". They had a puzzled look on their faces. Then they asked why he was looking at a truck. He told them he was just there as my husband. That I was the one looking to buy. One of the men thought he was joking, but my hubby assured him he was serious. I looked at the men and told them that I had seen them just standing around and not offering me any help earlier on. I told them there are MANY women truck drivers out there and we live in the 21st century. I showed them the Letter Of Credit I had from my bank for the downpayment. I told them I wouldn't buy a truck from them. No way was I going to give them any sales commission. I went into the sales building and got the Manager and told him what had happened and how I felt. He apoligized profusely. We say goodbye and started to leave. By the time we got to our truck we could see the Manager had the 2 men in front of him and he was tearing a strip off of both of them. Served them right. Who knows, I might go back there, after some time, and deal with the Manager personally. Maybe he'll give me a better deal knowing what had happened. Let you know if I decide to do that. Drive safe everyone. :)
You should go to my post Maple Leaf. I have opened a can of worms about that in reverse, and the funny thing about it, that wasn't even my intentions :D |

I think you handled it in a professional manner. And I am almost sure those gentlemen will be treating everyone as if they are a customer in the future. |

Thanks very much Celebrity. I certainly hope they did learn something valuable for their unprofessionalism. I figured if I told others what had happened they'd also take something away from my experience.
I did see the post you made the other day. Yes, it did cause a bit of a stir I'd say. LOL I realize you really didn't mean for it to end up the way people took it. Drive safe everyone. :) |

Don't get me wrong Ceb, I am telling her to go back there either, because I would not give them my hard earned money either. So I 2nd that, I wouldn't give them any business. She just handled it in a Positive Manner. As you well know, that situation could have went several different ways, I am glad that she took the road with the less amount of friction.
Take care |

Does any one know where I can gather more info about trucks. One to where I would be more self sufficient a d two so I don't feel so much like a mushroom when I get into a conversation. I really don't like having to rely on other people for much but that seems to be the only way I learn out here. Thank you very much for your time
Bullseye: Do you ever get by a flying J?? They have a rotating rack of books. One is simply titled: TRUCKS. I've never even looked inside the cover, so I don't know. But, I would THINK it might be a good source of info on the various makes and models. Keep meaning to look at it closer myself.... cuz I don't know much about them, either!
Yes... I'm a MAN.... and I just admitted that!
Best of luck to ya!
