All of a sudden when going down the highway I lost all gears except 4th and 9th. The tranny makes some funny noises. When stopped I tried all other gears... none work not even reverse. I've never had any problems with the tranny until now. The screen and filter were not changed recently. Another driver indicated that the tranny is not shot, he said it may be something with gears out of sink, something minor. Would anyone have any advise on this problem?
Thanks

can you still "feel" the gears when attempting to engage? |

4th & 9th are direct drive in the front section- the sliding clutch gear engages the mainshaft directly into the input shaft for 4th & 9th, taking the countershafts out of the equation.
Therefore, I'm thinking that since the direct drive gears are working and none of the gears requiring the countershaft are operational, something has happened internally, possibly the main drive gear which drives the countershafts has failed, or the countershaft bearings have failed & allowed the countershafts to push away from the main drive gear.
Either of these possibilities would certainly account for a lot of "funny noises", and loss of all speeds except 4th & 9th.
Wish I had a better prognosis, but in my opinion something serious has happened in there. |

Drop the drain plug and check for shrapnel, that'll let you pull it and take off the cover. |

I was advised by the shop that the tranny is shot. A quote for the trany job is $5500, his includes a remanuf. tranny with my old one as core and $2000 for labor. The tranny was quoted as $3300. they also said I should replace both yokes, u-joints, clutch, and carrier bearing. The complete job was uoted as $7133.00 with 25 hrs. labor at $55.00 per hour.
The truck is a 96 Volvo w1a, cat c-12 with 1.275 million miles on the truck. The truck also needs several other repairs which could run into big dollars. My thought is that it's not worth the money to invest into this old truck. The motor is running strong.
Any opinions?
Thanks. |

7 is only a couple of stiff payments on a new truck ;0)

$2000 labor to drop the old tranny and bolt in a reman  ? That can't be right, maybe $200? You could also consider a used ($2000 ?) or find a decent mechanic to rebuild the old one... |

good point, i didn't even notice the 25 HRS on that quote! at the ih dealer the tranny guys were; pulling, rebuilding, and installing 13 spds in 16 hours. cursed volvo probably has engine mounts on trans bell housing, add an hour maybe two, put new mounts if they're worn.
the clutch would only add 15 mins to the job once the tranny's out.
the output yoke is zero labour, as a matter of a fact, it has saved some time as opposed to trying to get the old one off of the tailshaft.
the front u-joint is 1/2 out already...
why are we replacing yokes?; splines, or loose cup bores? not a whole lot can go wrong with a yoke.
with all of that, shouldn't they have recommended a new cross-shaft and release fork?
they not gonna have to worry about losing time on that job ;0) |

| That shop is trying to rip you off. I have personally removed and replaced a transmisson in 6 hours total time in a Volvo. The only repairs needed would be the clutch tranny of course and front U-joint. The rest is bill padding. Unless the driveshaft is cracked or twisted there is no reason to just replace it also the output yoke should be inculded on the reman tranny. |

Man that sound high for that job. I have a real good friend that is a truck mechanic. This summer we started at 7:00am and put a remanufactured 10 sp trans, new clutch, reman flywheel, new throw out bearing, new rear main seal. At 1:30 in the afternoon I was out for a test drive. Parts and his labor came to $3,400. It was both of us working on it.
On a side note, if you do all this put in new shifter isolator bushings, and inside the shifter tower there is a big spiral spring and a rubber/fiber o-ring that the shifter ball rides on that should be changed. You will swear you are in a new truck after all the work and parts |

hmmmm, what's a clutch tranny?
the front u-joint only "requires" replacemnet if it is worn/damaged... it's no more likely to be bad than a u-joint in the jack shaft.
the output yoke may come with the rebuilt, but it's typically just a plug, so that fluid doesn't run out of it... they're typically changed over and the new yoke goes back with the core, fwiw. I.E. - yokes are specific to the vehicle - that's why there's 10 zillion different ones; if it has an 1810, it has a different yoke than a 1710, or a rockwell driveline, or half-round or full-round yoke, etc, etc...
I don't think the drive shaft was quoted there...
if this unit had 2 bad u-joints and a loose hangar bearing, you should certainly have had "something" in the way of a driveline vibration???
i do agree, the labour looks heavy, but a volvo tranny r&r IS going to book more than 6 hours. a conventional r&r books 8 hrs ... 10 with a pto, then the volvo adds disassembly/assembly of the engine mounts (i'm assuming they're on the bell housing). I bet the labour guide will list it between 10 & 12 hrs. |
