get to the front speakers of 2004 Freightliner Classic XL. I want to switch them out with better speakers, but cannot see an easy way to get them out short of taking down the storage compartments.

I also want to replace them on my 2000 Freightliner and unless somebody knows an easier way I guess we’ll have to tear it down!

I had a freightliner, I put new speakers in the front because the factory ones were crap, and we had to take down the whole compartment to do it,

Unfortunately I turned my 22wrms x 4 pioneer up too loud and now the driver side sound like crap at above mid volume. I'm gonna try using one of them roto-zip tools to cut the proper size holes for 5-1/4" speakers around the present speakers and then just front mount the new ones. I'm also gonna do the same for the rear speakers in the bunk except those are gonna be 8" subs - most pioneers have a mode (FIE) to only send lows to the rear speakers. The rears might be easier as they looked to be front mounted already?

Update! Well, I should've jumped back on here sooner and let you all know what I did. I ended up having to take the entire upper storage down, removing the sun visors, all of the vinyl trim around it and everything. Anyone planning on doing this just take note, it's not as 'easy as it looks or sounds' job. There are a lot of screws holding this puppy in place, also watch when re-installing it as I had kept getting hung up on the air horn switch.
A few other things you might want to know:
You cannot front mount the speakers unless you are going to go down to a smaller 4" speaker size instead of the 5 1/4 size that is factory installed, and I don't know of any that sound too good in 4".
If you are going to replace the rear speakers and want 'true stereo seperation' you are going to have splice into the speaker wires where it goes to the fader/balance knob in the back and run your own left or right. The way it's wired from the factory for rear is both rears on one channel, either both left or both right. Anyone want to know anything else as at this point I've ran into it all installing my 4.1 800 watts system just pm me. |
