Anyone heard of the National Women's Football League? Here is a story from our local paper about it.
Women's football comes to the Falls
Tryouts set for 2 p.m. Saturday
By Cindy Kahler Thomas/For the Times Record News
December 1, 2006
Lisa Horton, quarterback for the Pittsburgh Passion, gets her hair pulled by an unidentified player from the Erie Illusion during a recent National Women's Football Association game. "Hut, hut, hut" may have a feminine ring to it Saturday when tryouts are held for a women's professional football team in Wichita Falls. "We are going to start this team from nothing and see what happens," said Debbie Lening, vice president of the National Women's Football Association. "We need everything." Lening said that in order to get enough women for a team, "It usually takes a couple of rounds of tryouts. Girls will show up and go tell their friends, and more will show up next time." The league charges a one-time tryout fee of $35. While tackle football isn't for the faint of heart, no experience is necessary. The coaches will start with the basics, and teach the team the skills needed to play, Lening said. "They think we are expecting NFL players, and we aren't," she said, "We just want girls who want to play football." Lening would like to have about 35 women on the team, but she said they "won't be turning players away. "The main thing is to provide a chance for them to play and have fun, in a well-run league," she said. Tryouts will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lake Wichita Park on Fairway. Anyone interested in playing, coaching or owning the team is encouraged to attend. The NWFA has teams in Oklahoma City, Austin and Dallas. For the 2007 season, the NWFA will have 37 teams nationwide scheduled to play. Lening said they have several expansion teams to add in the 2008 season. |
