| :D Do all diesel engines have sleeves in the cylinders? I got to wondering if one of the many items to be changed when rebuilding a diesel engine was changing the sleeves and piston rings and dropping the crank. What all else is involved when doing a complete rebuild? 8) |

Depends on what engine you're talking about; if it's in a class 8 truck, YES it has sleeves, and yes they are replaced during an overhaul. The crankshaft is usually NOT removed during an overhaul... unless a condition warrants its remnoval... the crankshaft main/thrust bearings are replaced during overhaul.
A ford powerstroke (IH t444e) or GM (isuzu) duramax does not have sleeves.
A cummins ISC has sleeves but, an ISB does not.
A 4.2L GM inline 6 gasser also has sleeves because it has an aluminum block (dry sleeves).
Small Deutz air-cooled diesels have sleeves as well.
A detroit 2-stroke has sleeves --- some are wet, some are dry. |

A complete rebuild generally includes;
fitting rod and main bearings
fitting cylinder kits (pistons, pins, rings, and liners (sleeves))
replace cylinder head(s)
bottom and top end gasket set
additionally; oil cooler, fuel injectors, engine brakes overhauled
some (certainly not all) dyno it to measure hp/performance
Anything over and above that is typically the result of problems found with components/systems during the overhaul. |

I rebuilt an I-6 out of an '88 Volvo L90 this past summer... it had wet sleeves. |

I heard (truck stop rumor) that the mid 90's or so volvo engines didn't have sleeves.
Not the most reliable source! |

You could well be right, allan. I checked quickly on tractor-trailer.net and they don't mention anything about sleeves or liners in a '95 d12. Maybe that's part of the reason for their lack of popularity... if you scratch a cylinder wall... well, it's part of the cylinder block (that's no fun!). Speaking of lack of serviceability, I was talking with a FL tech yesterday who tells me that if liner protrusion is low in an MBE, the block is scrap... the counterbore ledge can't be cut. |
