the guy says cat will pay for what ever the damage is, but what about the labor??he's trying to talk me into paying the labor....or from $55 to $20 some an hour...he'll work with me...

what do you guys think???? :roll:

it's still in full waranty and i told him that it wasn't like i neglected the motor...if he tries to make me pay for some portion of the labor what would you say if you was in my situation????

careful... it could have been a fuel injector wash the cylinder down...

Something broke somewhere and got caught up in the cylinder/piston. It could have been from anywhere the oil or fuel flows. I am not a mechanic. The same thing happened to my F350.

In my case, the entire engine. Remember I am not a mechanic. There was a hole in one of my cylinders. A sleeve would not work nor would honing it or over boring it. In your case any one of those may work. It all depends on how deep the scores are.

Since it is under warranty. get it out and read it. It should cover labor.

but....their saying that they are not a "cat dealer", and only cover their halve "IF" they screwed up. which more than likely will be never, they won't charge for the parts but "what about the labor"...

we'll see tommorrow....

more than likely it probably has something to do with the piston assembly, in my opinion...

but they'll say it's not their fault...it's a part defect....

we'll see...

if i had the time and money i would hire a third party to do the checking.

then we'll find out who's fault it is...

The written warranty will spell it out.

I agree with reading the warranty...every single word!!

Aside from that, what's really important is finding out what failed and why. You trusted this shop to do the inframe, so I imagine they must do quality work. With that said...you went 70K without any problems right? However, something as simple as an incorrectly installed wristpin retainer could possibly take that many miles before any symptons were noticed. Make sure you get to see the piston/rod assembly when it's removed. Pay attention to the scored area of the liner and the corresponding location on the piston assembly. Take a few pics if possible and post them??

Granted I don't wrench on big rigs, but I have done it on 4 wheelers for 30 yrs. It's not rocket science chasing down causes of failure, it's just paying attention to every detail.

As for the parts warranty...if a part failed within the limits of the warranty and you have the receipts for all required maintenance, you can bet your last $$ I'd be all over the manufacturer to cover the labor if a piston or ring failed. BTDT...and in my favor too.

black smoke isn`t a turbo going bad, black smoke is caused by excessive fuel, any number of things can go out of adjustment making the mixture richer not just a blown turbo, my truck will roll coal out of the pipes all night long and its in tip top shape, just turned up.

it wouldn`t be your timing gears either, the tolerances are pretty close and they see so much stress that if they could jump a gear you`d have alot more damage on your hands then some white smoke and noises when your on it.

Yes... because it got hot and started to fuse the piston to the cylinder wall. The question is WHY it got hot.

Some ideas; broken injector tip, failed inj. solenoid, turbo compressor seal, broken/plugged oil spray nozzle, cooling system hot spots, engine overheat, broken ring, pin retainer, poor sleeve/piston fit, or... maybe just defective parts.

If it turns out to be component failure (from the overhaul kit), I don't see any reason why it should not be covered by warranty --- and, in my neck of the woods, warranty includes labour (or, at least most of it). If it doesn't then you are getting your engine repaired at the wrong place.

Be aware that the CAT guy WILL most likely take a download from the ECM.

well just got a call today....a Cat guy will be coming thursday to take a look at it....

i guess #2 cylinder is kind of scorched too...#3 is a crap...

i was told that the Cat guy is charging $80/hr....and yes he'll be downloading the ECM....

do you guys think that i in anyways could cause this chaos...

i tried telling the shop that there's no way i could do such a damage...then he said that he's not accusing me just giving me options like if i did it then it's my bill, if the shop did it then it's theirs, if Cat did it then it's theirs....

it's not like the engine seize from no oil (which is no brainer that i could've done)

but it's the piston, how can i damage the pistons??

First of all let me get this out of the way.. LMFAO!!!!!... ok now. Granted I'm fairly new on here but I graduated #2 in my class from Universal Technical Institute out in Phoenix. I had the Auto/Diesel/Industrial program and aced everything, only missed one question in the two years of school, and while going to school I worked for I-10 International as a Technician.

Smoke:
White = Water
Black = Fuel
Blue = Oil

It doesn't matter what type of engine.. thats laws of science crap. If you're blowing white smoke out of the breather and/or stacks its water burning in the combustion chamber (cylinder)

Ok.. first off Oil in the cylinders is typically (not always) caused by bad rings. Being that your engine was overhauled this past spring thats probably not the cause but if the piston rings weren't seated properly, or the sleeves or it could be a bearing/seal in your turbo blowing oil.

If it was a blown piston believe me you'd know. You'd hear a loud clanking from the moment you start the engine till the rod came thru the block and took out your highpressure oil pump, fuel pump, filters, etc... Trust me... I had a Coca-cola driver that drove his truck into I-10 with that same problem... he turned it off and the last 2-3 gallons of oil came pouring out onto the ground. So its NOT a blown piston. Rings.. maybe.

But back to the smoke. White smoke is water burning. Possibly headgasket crack allowing water into the chamber.
