A Backhoe weighing 8 tons is on top of a flatbed trailer and heading East on Interstate 70 near Hays, Kansas. The extended shovel arm is made of hardened refined steel and the approaching overpass is made of commercial-grade concrete, reinforced with 1 1/2 inch steel rebar spaced
at 6 inch intervals in a crisscross pattern layered at 1 foot vertical spacing.

Solve: When the shovel arm hits the overpass, how fast do you have to be going to slice the bridge in half? (Assume no effect for headwind and no braking by the driver...)

Extra Credit: Solve for the time and distance required for the entire Rig to come to a complete stop after hitting the overpass at the speed calculated above.


Answer - Who cares, the trucking company just bought themselves a bridge.

Given=
clearance of back-hoe in locked down position =15.56 ft.
clearance from roadway to underside of overpass = 16.93 ft.
flatbed deck height @ normal tire pressure = 3.54 ft.
% of tire squat under load excess of 20-ton = +/- 19%
est. of tire rise due to tire temperature = +.073 in. realitive humidity 60%
diameter of driver faceprint on windshield
computer velocity readout at POI
total fecalmatter mass cc contents of driver shorts

conversion factors ...Xa2
..............................17c
..............................3.5T Y=mx + b
..............................where m is the slope and b is the Y- intercept

2h + 2w ~ P= 2 II 7 ~ [u3]

(x +/- h)2 + (y + k) 2 = 1 ~ X2 + (y-k)2

A 2 mx +/- b2-ub3 + Xa2 = b 2 x 17c


Combination Vehicle was traveling at approximately 64 mph.
All inertia was absorbed within 2 seconds.
Tensile strength of back-hoe no contest to overpass materials.
Had a CAT motor been propelling this Vehicle, instead of a Cummin's
our finding indicate total penetration...and Driver could have punched through quite easily...without impacting the windshield.

Further finding indicate boom extendtion would have occured with loading equipment forward or backward.

Driver was cited for not wearing a seatbelt.

Just some more info. That excavator is a long reach machine meaning that the boom and stick are much longer than on a normal excavator so you have to load them backwards in order to avoid being over length.

Rawlco I have to object to the part about it being a Cat excavator frankley Cat can bring out there new 330 excavator and it still won't out dig our (1997 or 1999 can't rember) Link Belt 4300 with 8,000hrs.
