We have yet to recieve our New Mexico permits, and have a trip we would like to take. It says that a temp permit may be purchased at the port of entry. Does anyone know where we can get a trip permit going in from I 40. This will be our 1st time in NM.
Thanks

You get it at the port of entry coming into NM on I-40. I think they are like $25.00, atleast it was the last time I had to get a permit.

If I remember, they charge by your weight and the miles you plan on driving in New Mexico.

It happened back when I was driving (1998-2000). NM had problems getting their permits printed out and sent out letters stating that the previous year permit was valid if you had possesion of a copy of that letter.

When you are going either east or west on 40 just stop in at the port of entry and they will ask you where you are going and they will figure how many miles you will be traveling and charge you accordingly. The last time I went across there it was about $22 bucks each way. Just remember you are only paying for one way so when you turn around and go back you have to pay again.

It's charged by the weight of the truck.

Have your driver purchase at entry to state and fax you a blank request form, so next time you can fax/pay ahead of the truck reaching NM. Price is about $25

It usually takes New Mexico about 6 weeks to get your permits back to you. Unless you have it in your possession, you will need to stop at the first port of entry and buy one. I have asked them about it before, but all they would tell me is that it takes about 6 weeks.

I called one time and talked to a lady in that department. I asked her why it took so long. She said that it was because they were a little laid back in New Mexico.

Also because Gov. Bill Richardson likes to spend state funds on important things like re-investigating the Billy the Kid case.
