Step Timing Control problem. It advances the injection timing during cold start-up.

The knob you are referring to is a throttle lock control to bump your idle up.
Older non comp motors that I have ever driven have always smoked like than in cold weather when you first start them up. Not a mechanic just an opinion. |

If the knob is on the floor, it was probably for a power take off. Look around the side of the tranny and you will probaby find the other end of the cable.

ok after a full service the thing seems to somek alot less when its cold. but i still got to keep the rmps up when cold and idling cause it wants to cut out when cold. that must be what the knob is for. i need to hook it back up. btw oil was black as night and filters were crap as well as the air filter dirty as hell so i think a pm helped it out alot. should be alot better. when i pull my first load with it ill post up how she did.

The throttle lock cables were usually mounted on the bottom of the dash. BTW, they make a good poor man's cruise control if you don't have one.
