i was recently speaking with another driver about my truck..i have a 2000 freightliner 660k miles(detroit 60 series) and about the past year i noticed it just doesnt pull the same like it use to...... he has a truck with over 1million miles and recommended i get an --i believe he said an "overhead"? what exactly does this do and whats the cost? he also said it costs about 400$...... its nothing wrong with engine, i just had cam replaced and some other work done on it, and never have had a major problem out of engine.... thanks
and for arguments sake-- i do have PM's done every 12k miles, among other things, so i do take care of truck :D
any info will be greatly appreciated |

"Overhead", generaly means ajusting valves, injectors, and jakes.
Don't know about Detroits, but CAT recomend it every 150,000 miles.
The last one i did for my Acert C-15, was $336, at CAT dealer. |

| You say that you just had the cam replaced? If this job was done properly, a valve / injector set would have been done during re-assembly. Was there any change in performance following the cam change? |

| yes.... i did have a valve/injector done(replaced) also...ive noticed a little... but ive also noticed my fuel mileage has improved also..but as far as pulling up a hill -not much |

Marcel have you had the charge air cooler tested? Mine was leaking very bad. Put in a new one and the same bridge I had to down shift two gears now I go over in cruise control.
The charge air cooler isn't something you notice all of a sudden it is real gradual. Once I got the new cooler in I then noticed a pin hole in one of my cooler connection hoses. I thought I had a whistle under the hood. Put all new hoses on and I went from my mileage going up and down from 6.0 to 8.0 to a steady 8.4/8.5. And I am real happy with the power from the 430hp DD |

charge air cooler?? hmmm can u give me more info..id rather sound like i dont know jack in this message than when i go to a mechanic and ask :D
what exactly does charge air cooler do? |

| Charge aair cooler is the air to air cooler for the turbocharger. It is the radiator mounted in front of the main radiator of the truck. If there is a leak in that it will cause a loss in power and feul milage to name a few probelems. |

then it cant be that then....i havent had any problem with fuel mileage...its just pullin power...and ive never had an overhead |

If your losing pulling power there just about has to be a small change in fuel economy. With a diesel engine fuel and power go hand in hand.
If you had a valve or injector replaced and no overhead was done you better find a new mechanic. |

| Have them check the engine timing on the camshaft. You stated that you had the camshaft replaced why was that done. On a 60 series if that was done it means something else is going way wrong since that is an overhead cam engine and to be honest a BITCH to work on. I had a 98 Century at Henderson Trucking that was a dog til they put on a new charge air cooler and hoses for the same there was a pinhole leak in it and that right there caused 90% of my probelms. Just because the leak is not visable does not mean there is not one is the system someplace. After that was fixed that 500 detroit mated to a super 10 would hang with the 550 cats up Parley grossed out at 80K considering the run before I needed to be towed to a shop due to a overheat shutdown. |

| Same here marcell You might also want to have them do a leak down test also and look not assume that the roller did not bend a valve or hurt anything else in the head. |

| There are lots of possibilities, but 95% of low-power complaints that I've encountered were solved by fuel filters, an air filter, or a turbo boost pressure related problem(Charge air cooler, hoses, etc.) Since your truck gets serviced regularly, I'd check the turbo(make sure it spins freely), CAC, and all the hoses. Don't forget to check the small hose that goes from the bottom of the engine intake manifold to the air compressor intake. It's just a heater hose, but it's used for the compressor air intake. I've seen a lot of detroits lose their boost pressure there. |
