I love my Cummins. the repairs on it has been VERY low, and it is a very "consistant" engine - it has power when I need it, and it is nice and quiet.
You couldn't pay me to trade it for a Cat.
Thanks for the info Rev.
What sort of fuel millage do you get with it? |

You are delusional if you think a "dime a dozen Cat" is worth more than a Cummins. These numbers are right off of Truckpaper.com:
Brand new 379 with a Cummins, 10 spd, 63" sleeper: $119,450
Brand new 379 with a Cat, 10 spd, 63" sleeper: $117,200
Total number of NEW 379's available with a Cummins: 21
Total number of NEW 379's available with a Cat: 332
Total number of NEW 2006 379's with a Cummins: 6
Total number of NEW 2006 379's with a Cat: 77
What does this say? That Cat's are a dime a dozen, and Cummins are hard to come by, and are in high demand. I know this firsthand, as the original truck I had money down on (which had a Cummins) was sold out from under me by the dealership, while the trucks with Cat's sat festering on the lot.
Not to mention that the extended warranty on the Cummins is a heck of a lot cheaper than on the Cat.

Neither. I bought it last June.

About 5.75 mpg with the wing on the sleeper. Typical 379 numbers, and if anyone tries to tell you that a Cat will get you a better number, they are a liar.
My truck never goes over 70 mph, btw. |

I had a coolant leak. That's it. Covered under warranty. 1 day downtime for the repair. |

first off I sold that truck a while ago, second of all it was 310 not 300 and finally my wife never starved
If/when you are pulling overdimension/overweight freight the longer the better. The permits and rules are usually based on how many axles spaced over how many feet. Shorter trucks will require more axles. |

There are more Peterbilts with CAT's then Cumaparts, that is because Cummins are not in high demand, you don't see very many of them under the hoods at the dealership, most have CAT's. Most of your Owner Operators and alot of companys are not buying them, plain and simple! They want trucks with a good reliable engine.
Are you trying to tell me that Peterbilt Inc. is only building a few trucks with Cummins engines and most of the Peterbilts coming out of the factory have CAT's under the hood because Cummins are in high demand? If they are in high demand wouldn't Peterbilt build most of them with Cummins engines if everyone is wanting them? Maybe you should call them up in Denton and advise them of this.

And you are clueless again on your Truck Paper home work, this doen't tell me a thing. There is a $2,250 price differnce, one could have more goodies then the other one, leather enterior, paint, longer W.B., ETC...

That was a sign to buy one with a CAT, their were doing you a favor and you didn't catch on.

If you knew anything, you would know that the reason that most Petes are built with Cats is because of the contract that Peterbilt has with Cummins. The engines aren't even made available to Peterbilt, and are snatched up as soon as they are offered. Kenworth doesn't have this problem, and therefore has more Cummins available.
It runs along the same lines as the problem they had with Detroit around 2000. Detroit made a limited amount of engines available to Peterbilt.
But hey - if you want to blindly believe what your inept dealer is telling you, go ahead. I'll wave to you when you are broke down on the side of the road. |

It says that Cat is much more popular than Cummins and the the majority of people buy them over Cummins. |

No, it doesn't. Those numbers mean that the dealers are STUCK with a bunch of CAT equipped Pete's that they haven't been able to unload. Vehicles in high demand DO NOT languish on dealership lots. Ask anyone who has been in the market for a 2006 VW Jetta TDI in the last 8 months.
That being said, CAT owners are very proud of their purchases, I mean you always see them parked on the side of the road showing off that yellow engine. |

Exactly

Paccar is the name of the parent company for both KW and Peterbilt (as well as several other truck manufacturers). Each makes their own deals with engine manufacturers for the amount of engines that are supplied. Peterbilt just has a lousy agreement with Cummins.

I am telling you VERBATIM what I was told from:
1. 3 Peterbilt dealers
2. Peterbilt themselves, when I spoke to them at Mid America Truck Show
3. Cummins, when I spoke to them at Mid America Truck Show |
