My current radio only has one weatherband, the one I am looking at has 6 or 7 weatherbands. From what I understand you pick the one WX station that gives the best reception. My question is do you change the setting based on where you are driving or is the one you pick on the west coast ok for everywhere?

You just turn the knob until you get the one with the best reception. You'll lose stations just like with an am or fm radio (fade in/out).

Big DaddyD, if it's the same one I have, a Cobra29, watch out with the Instant Alert. If you have it turned on, when it goes off for the weather channel your on, it will freak you out. It is WAY too loud, a deaf person would hear it no problem it is so loud and will scare the do-do outta you going down the road.

I am looking at the Uniden PC78Elite.. it does have the weather band notification. I am sure it will scare the heck out of me when it goes off.

The Uniden is the same way. That weather notification will scare the crap out of you. Kind of like having a pager on vibrate in your pocket and having it go off in the middle of a really good movie.

My cobra 29 has a weatherband. It has several channels. I never use it. I keep it turned off. By the way bigdaddyd,if you have a Cobra, you can turn it off by having the knob on 0. I accidently had mine on one time, and didnt know it. I was outside of Lubbock one night, and it was storming, and that alarm went off. I almost hit the ditch. It sounded like a screamin meanie. Every time I turn on my radio,I make sure that the weatherband is off. :P

Yeah, the weatherband knob on the Cobras has channel numbers 0-7. 0 is off,and of course,1-7 are the different channels. I didnt know it either at first, until I decided to read the owners manual. I always make sure that it is off. That alarm is the worst sounded thing I have ever heard. Worst than a screamin meanie.

The Uniden has an "off" selection before all the numbers for the WX channels.

When mine went off, my wife was with me, she hit the roof it scared her so bad. I didn't even flinch because I was so focused on driving thru the torrential downpour of a severe thunderstorm.
