I and my wife want to start teaming, can we log 8 on and 8 off or do we have to drive 10 straight? I haven't teamed since 1991 so i don't know what the best way to log would be. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They've really messed things up with the new HOS. Some folks like them- when I'm running hard it just makes it harder to be "legal." Which is, of course, not the same as being safe.

I think you can log 8 hours straight. You are supposed to have a break somewhere in your 11 hours, but it doesn't say where.

I'm just answering since no one else did. I know how I log things- and I may be making mistakes here and there but I have passed a few paperwork checks and my carrier hasn't had any problems- so I think I'm okay.

The problem you'll run into with 8 on and 8 off is that if you drive 8 hours and take an 8 hour break... you're at 16 hours. You'll need 2 more hours to make a 10 hour break (I believe you can split the 10 hours into 8 and 2). Once you start driving, unless you have a 10 hour break, you cannot drive after 14 hours. So your 8 on, 8 off puts you at 16 hours- well over the 14 hour limit unless you take another 2 hours off.

That is my poorly versed understanding.

Sorry.

If you're talking about driving 8 on and 8 off with a team mate, NO... You can't do it unless you both take off 2 more hours. You can drive 10 on and 10 off, of include fueling to come out to 10 hours. But, since you MUST take a 10 hour break between shifts. In order for one driver to get a 10 hr break, the other driver almost must drive for 10 hours.

So how DO you team drive under the new rules? Is the only way possible 10 on/10 off?

you can do 8 on, 2 off, 2 on, 8 off. either that or 10/10. You can only split 8/2 now. Anything less then 8 hours sleeper berth counts towards your 14 hour rule as well.

I guess the new HOS were intended on making the roads safer by making drivers too confused to drive.

You can almost understand their thinking, most studies show that you need 8 hrs of sleep to get enough rest, but most studies are done in a controlled enviroment and in the real world of team driving it has to be damn near impossible to get 8 hrs of rest in the bunk.
I think that anymore than 5 on 5 off is too much to ask,if you don't get proper rest how can they expect you to now drive for 8 hrs?
I was never more tired driving than I was the few times that I drove teams running to CA,just couldn't trust or relax enough to get any rest.
