| Great outfit if you can get on with em'. They're picky, tho which rules out felons, vagrants, bad MVR/DAC's, and people who don't shower (the ones OTR companies seem to hire in droves). Pay/bennies are close to union scale with no union dues (no pension, but surprsingly there's talk of them rolling one out soon). It's 3 years to hit top-rate at FedEx versus 2 for the union companies. Home everynight - no hotels. Uniforms for all drivers. Most of the drivers I meet speak highly of the job and FedEx itself. The majority have been there since the American Freightways days. |

Good company, low turnover. Here out west FedEx is mostly re-branded Viking.
Pay is par for the course for LTL.
Unless its your lucky day and the planets are in alignment you won't get hired with less than 1-2 years driving experience.
LTL has its own quirks and aggravations when you're new and on call. Once you are over the on-call hump and learn most of your customers its an easy job. |

If you are a safe driver and compete in the trucking roadeos, you will get hired. Their Chairman is heavy into safety and award their drivers with cash, prizes, cruises if you place in the state and national level. So I recommend you start competing and place that on your resume. | Fed Ex would be a cake walk,if you can get on with them. Takes an act of congress :P Good benefits,great pay,and good hours. Once you get on,and get off of that extra board,its a great job. |

It depends on the local market. The Reno metro is very much a sellers market for drivers with all of the construction and growth. Most of the population growth is middle class to wealthy folk from CA who would never think of doing physical labor for a living so the blue collar labor pool is not growing at the same rate.
One of the drivers at my terminal was very close to being hired fresh out of CDL school. He turned in his app on a Monday and was told that that usually they won't hire newbies but they needed people pronto and would hire him if they could not get anyone soon; on Thursday they found someone else with experience.
I think most if not all of the LTLs are into TDC. At Con-Way if you qualify for nationals you get an extra week of vacation to attend. If you place you are given a brand new pickup and a new tractor that is assigned to you exclusively for a year. I know Roadway drivers get a new pickup if they place. |

| I looked at Fed Ex Freight in the Fontana area and at the time they said 1 year experience was needed, but you can work the dock until then. This was in the Apr. 2006. They have a big sign out front now that says they are looking for drivers. Later this week I'll be in the area so I might stop in if I have time and check it out. |

| I seen that FedEx Freight will be at a driver job fair here in Sac this weekend. I don't mind starting as a dock-cdl (thats what I'm doing for UPS Frieght now).....anyway I'll keep my fingers crossed :) |
