This is purely a curiousity question.
Has anyone ever trained themselves for the CDL A exam?
Meaning, bought the DMV videos they have that show you exactly what you need to learn and do to prepare for the test?
I saw that the Connecticut DMV web site was advertising this and just wanted to know you all thought about it.
Do all states offer and accept this type of self training? I thought going to a certified school was mandatory for a CDL license.

I got my class B CDL this way. You can do the same for class A but most
OTR companies will not hire a newbie unless they went to a driving school.

Sure .... I did it all by myself .... got the book, studied it and went down and took the test. But doing it that way .. all your going to get is a Permit not the License ... When I first started years ago ... there were company's that would hire you and train you - without going through school... But now - - .. most of the big company's will insist that you go to school, because the Insurance company's have rules that the company's have to go by. So go ahead and get the Free book at the DMV or Tag Agency and study for the test ... so if you go to school ... you'll already be one step ahead of the group and understand more of what the teacher is talking about.

My roommate is an OTR driver and I want to drive teams with him after I get my CDL. The company he drives for has said they have no problem with me driving team with him as soon as I get my CDL. He wants to train me so I won't have to go the 'slave' route at a training company. Since I won't have a problem getting a job after I get my CDL, would this be preferable to attending a school? Or should I go the school route and join him after it is paid off? We don't have the money for me to attend on my own (even the local Community Colleges are out of the price range), so if I didn't train with him, I would have to go through Schneider or some other training company. If anyone has any useful suggestions about this, it would be appreciated. Thanks.
