I am pursuing a position driving for UPS in this area.
Are there any pitfalls I need to look out for?
I don't mind starting at the bottom of the totem poll. I am not afraid to chain up on Donner Summit. I am not put off by having to run nights.
I wouldn't turn down a position if it meant making less money than I do now until I gain some seniority. However, I do need to make enough money to pay my bills.
I don't want a temporary position either.
I figure I have ~25 years or so until retirement.
And how does UPS' aquisision of Motor Cargo and Overnite play into their hiring/recruiting? Is driving for UPS Freight as good as being a feeder driver for UPS?
Thanks all. |

Mostly means that there are a lot of veterans out of work so UPS could get more freight for their part timers and casuals can run at a price savings to UPS
OH.. And chaining up on Donner every night gets pretty old! I used to haul propane to Truckee every other night all winter.. The tank I delivered too was up behind the town in a residential area.. no fun in the winter! |

| UPS freight doesn't have anything to do with the package side of the company. No they don't make as much as feeder drivers. Most of the frieght side is still non-union. |

I'm sure UPS is run the same way out there as it is here which is you are hired as A temp. on the Dock and work your way up to driver. |

| Ok, well I hate to burst your bubble, but are you aware of how UPS works ? We do not hire drivers off the street (exceptions are Denver and some locations in the Midwest which I am unaware of). All employee's start off part-time and work their way up through the bidding process. You will load and unload trucks, sort packages and then if your lucky, drive a "package car". After a few years depending on the company's needs you may get to bid a "feeder run". These runs service UPS's various service centers utilizing double trailers. If you have enough seniority you may bid a team run. I won't lie though, you are looking at quite a few years. I spent 6 years in a package car before I could bid a "feeder/combo" bid. You will make very decent money once you go full time@UPS though even if you do not drive. Even in the package car, I made an extremely good living. I just enjoy feeder work because I don't have supervisor's breathing down my neck and I don't have to put up with the public. I have run Reno/Sparks and I can tell you that there is a WHOLE lot of people waiting for those jobs. You mostly pull triple sets down the 95 to Las Vegas or east to Salt Lake City on I-80. Chaining is not an issue. When the weather is bad, triples are not allowed. BOL, it's a good company. As far as UPS "Freight" i.e. Overnite/Motor Cargo, we are in the process of organizing them. I am un-sure how they operate, but eventually they will all be Teamsters. As far as pay/benefeits, I don't think they come close yet to us, but eventually they will. |

| Update: the positions they are hiring for are with UPS Freight-the terminal that was Motor Cargo. Supposedly the only one that is union. |

Right now Motor Cargo is below par for LTL. I was talking to one of their guys yesterday while waiting to be loaded, they are getting $19/hr and pay $~200 month for bennies. In his opinion nothing has changed besides the name since they were bought.
Right now it?s about a 6-8 year wait to get into a package car or feeders in Reno according to the drivers I bump into on my rounds. Then I would imagine you would have to run Donner for quite some time as well until you could get the easy southern or eastern runs.
If you ever want to talk to feeder drivers pull into Dutch Flat (MM145) on any weeknight bwtween about 2030-0400.; its the unoffical UPS drivers lounge. |

| As an employee of UPS for 3 years, feederfred paint the most accuarte picture on how you get hired in a feeder runs. I heard rumors while working there guys that have been there some years are making $80K/year. |

Ah yes, UPS is a good company to start with, like feederfred said. You have to start at the bottom, work a few years..then move up a little bit at the time. That's where I hope to be in a few years. Loading package cars in the morning at the moment though. (some days are more intense then others). |
