Working for Con-Way has a Jekyll & Hyde aspect to it.
Being on the extra board sucks. The last two guys hired both left after getting jack for hours.
I hated having to work graves 1/2 the week and days the rest. I was written up for refusing to come in after having not slept for 20 hrs. I was just about ready to quit
I got lucky about two months ago one of the guys on outbound dock left to go work for FedEx and no one wanted his bid; as the least senior regular guy I defaulted into it.
Now with my start time on outbound its a great job. I do a mix of dock work, P&D and the odd line run when we're are short drivers. A bad week is 36 hrs, a good week is 50-60.
Take what the salesfolk say with a grain of salt. Being a serial optimist is a job requirement. |

| Things are so slow right now our two lowest bid guys on line haul have only ran twice in the last two weeks, in fact they both took vacation this week to keep their normal pay cause its so slow. |

Bummer.
I some states if your hours drop below a certain amount you can collect unemployment for the week. I know if that happened in NV you could. |

Midwest I know nothing about, same with the East Coast. Other than that, you work your way up. But, you can go from part-time to full time fairly fast if you work hard and are reliable. Best of luck. Con-Way drivers would be perfect for us...And Denver will run you as teams on the road board. Great dinero though...
Well went to check out UPS, they do hire feeders drivers off the street and they are now hiring..... the catch: 3 years experience of "all season weather" pulling doubles. I fell short on that, only been with Conway for 6 months pulling doubles. I went to Roadway after leaving UPS, filled out the book (application) and got a call the next day for an interview. Went to the interview and went well and they scheduled me for a road test on Tuesday this week. So I guess I will see what happens this next week.
Hard to decide, bail on Conway? or go for a road job with Roadway? |

A lot of it varies with the freight volume and management at your terminal.
I'd consider bailing as well if I were in your shoes. Being on the bottom of the extra board is going to suck at any LTL, be it Con-Way, Roadway, UPS or whatever. Have you talked to the guys at the bottom of the board at Roadway? You might want to make sure you are not just chasing the green on the other side of the proverbial fence.
At some point in the future I suspect that Roadway, Yellow and USF are going to be formally merged into one company. Something to keep in mind if you are looking at the longer term.
By the time you have three years in at most LTLs your pay hours are going to be similar to what you can get at UPS. Heck in a 65 or 70mph state you can actually make more on mileage that the hourly UPS pays.
Both will become good jobs if you can stick out the lean times at the beginning. |

| Yep it will be an awesome job IF I can stick with it during the slow times. At some of the pay the linehaul guys are pulling down, thats the hard part to leave not to mention the bennies we get in the short and long term. Wife wants me to stick it out for the long run, more so than any other job I've ever had. But right now is what concearns me the most. I want my kids to have the stuff they need to have. I'm tired of just scraping by. In two years she will be done with school and things should get ALOT better by then. Just not sure if I can make it that long on scraping by. |

| Man, I'm really sorry to hear you guys@Con-Way are having kind of a tough time right now. If you can get on FULL TIME@ Roadway go for it. Just make sure you ask that it's not a "casual" "live by the phone" type of deal. I wish Brown would have considered you too. I was un-aware that we were going to the "street" up there. Haven't run Reno/Sparks in a long while, I do Phoenix/Tucson. I wondered why I haven't seen as many Con-Way sets at night running to Blythe. Best of luck.. |

| I know befor I left Conway at the USE terminal 10 guys quit and they were there for ten plus years, an I was still only getting two to three days at best. That Does not mean that Conway is bad or good But it sure seemed to slow down a lot when they went thru the rebranding. |

| They are not by anymeans a bad company. Just things are VERY slow right now. Could be industry wide or just company wide. I don't know. All I know is I need to make more money right now and it will take me along time till I get to where I'm making enough to support the family. I don't have any bills except house either. Wife is full time student. I guess I'm just in a big pickle. Time to S**t or get off the pot, I guess. What to do, what to do, what to do. |

| I'm not trying to down Conway either, Conway is a great company. It's hard to adjust when you are used to running line-haul every night and now maybe 2 times a week. I work at a 170+ door terminal and on good nights we have 45 runs, lately it's been down to 38-42. Thats not a drastic change but it drasticly affects me. I guess I will see what happens........ |

| I've been hearing alot of griping about Conway from guys on my route: hours cut back, bids eliminated, guys not working, management jumping ship to the competition, accounts lost, etc. And this is coming from senior men on the totem pole - some of whom have +15 years in and are thinking about putting apps in over at FedEx Freight and UPS Freight. Yeah, it's slowed down at our company as well, but damn... it's not THAT slow. Somethin's not on the level over there and where there's smoke, there's usually a big fire brewin'. |
