I was offered a job with Steven's out of Dallas, and other than the time away from home, what are the down sides to working for this company?

Downside - five to six weeks out. Do an archives search here, at layover.com, truck.net, ooida.com, and safersys.org. You'll find gouge on 'em. BOL

I worked for Stevens Transport between 1998 and 2000. It wasn't all peaches and cream but it certainly wasn't so negative that I would tell people to stay away. Though from what I understand, quite a few things have changed in the 6 years I've been out of the loop, can't tell you if they're for the better or worse.

I got my start at Stevens and let me tell you this company is awful! First off the pay blows when I left it was .26 a mile after a year. Second off anything and I do mean anything goes wrong and it'll be coming out of your check. I had a load from IBP (Iowa Beef Processors Stevens #1 account) going to NYC with 4 Drops. I went back and watched the lumpers as soon as I got backed into the dock every time(Some lumpers in NYC will take stuff if you don't watch them). On this particular load at the first drop the receiver had started unloading B4 I even got back there. I kept a seal record as required by Steven's did everything by the book. When I got to the final we (the receiver and I) discovered 2 boxes of steaks missing. I filled a claims report with OS&D an was assured that everything was taken care of. 2 weeks later I got a call from OS&D and they told me I would be paying for those steaks $1589. And from then until the day I quit every Friday my check would be $100 short. One Friday after turning in a load worth $400 I got a check for $0.00 After arguing with them for almost a week they agreed that they'd goofed but since I "owed them money" I would not be getting it back.
I got hired in at J.B. (say what you will I like J.B.) and when it came time to verify my year at Stevens I was told that they do not verify employment until one year after you terminate employment (Luckily I had pay stubs to prove to J.B. I worked there) I then got a call from Stevens and they had the gaul to ask me to come back!

There must have been something wrong with your seal record because I had a similar multi drop load that came up 2 cases short and I wasn't charged for squat because I had all the complete signatures and seal records.

I sat and talked to a Stevens driver in a Pilot truck stop the other afternoon. He had been out for 7 weeks and was trying to get home for his anniversary. He told me he had only 5 at home in 2006 and he was quitting after he got home. He pulled out log books for the last 90 days and showed me how much he had run. His dispatcher had been telling him for over a month he would get him home "next week" and something always "came up" at the last minute. I'd run the other way

this is wrong, actually - if someone is currently employed w/ stevens, they won't release any employment info for 15 to 30 business days (at least as per the employment verification phone message). if they've termed, everything comes up on DAC and can be gotten within a matter of hours.

i dislike stevens just b/c of that - it's annoying to have to wait a month for employment info!

When I went to school in Colorado there were 15 students going thru Steven's company training. From what I understand, They recruit alot of people. I wonder if they have that much work or do they go thru that many drivers.

They have VERY high turn over no one that I kept in contact with from my class stayed longer than a year. From my class we started out with 48 by the end of class we were down to 42. We then went to orientation where they brought in people from the other schools and got jumped up to 73. By the time we got back from OTR training the class was 24. I kept in contact with 10 of them, I was the last one of us to quit. (Guess I'm thick headed or loyal or sumthin) They are just a really bad company to work for. And as far as the 15-30 day thing you may be right I quit the day I started at JB. They are a terrible law breaking company anyway you stack it, and I wouldn't suggest to my worst enemy that they work there.

I just left Stevens and what you have read is all true.......don't bother going there....I got home twice in 8 months....and that was a drive by visit......and I had to route myself out of route just to do that....with the exception of Karen in Alliance leasing they were all worthless.....No help to you at all...the owner just sitting in his corner office counting his money....I went thru school there too.....they pump thru students at a pace of 30-40 a week.......113% turnover rate also....that speaks volumes in its self......JUST GET AWAY FROM STEVENS FAST......

Stevens has nicer trucks than most training companies. (Kenworth T2000's) They will turn off the Jake Brake and cruise controls on the trucks if you are a newbie driver. The starting pay is very low at .26 cpm and does not improve much even after you have a few years experience under your belt. They will try to sell you on their lease purchase program even if you have just gotten your cdl a few months ago. Big mistake. At $635 a week plus fuel, maintenance, etc. You wont make any money unless you are running as a team or trainer. You won't see your friends and family for 3 to 6 weeks at a time. The reefer engines are loud making it more difficult to sleep at night. Do our reasearch, you can make more money and get home more often by working elswhere.

I accepted an offer with Stevens for school. I arrived at the hotel/extended stay and there were people wandering around the parking lot up to no good at 11pm. I go to check in and they say they are out of Stevens rooms and send me down to another hotel they use.

This is the Howard Johnsons and what a total dump! I pulled into the parking lot and the place is run down. I walk in and they have me sign a clip board and assign me a room. There were crack heads wandering around the hallways and lobby. I get to my room and open the door and my roommate is in there smoking in the non-smoking room. The room is dirty and the carpets are stained.

I start talking to my roommate and he has just returned from his OTR training for five weeks. He tells me that I won't be seeing home for THREE months. 21 days in school, 3 days unpaid orientation, 5 weeks OTR training, 3 more days paid orientation and then another 3 weeks of OTR with another student. This is all back to back with no opportunity to get home. Plus you only get $350 a week for the whole 8 weeks you are out. After learning this and seeing the not so fine accommodations Stevens provided I promptly got up and left!

Luckily I had a back up plan with Central Refrigerated and I went over to thier hotel. It was a Best Western in Irving. Much better hotel, better pay for training and better cpm.
