I believe that both companies are good places to work.

Watkins and Shepard does not offer paid orientation. You will have ten days unpaid before you start earning money.

I do not know about TMC and their training pay.

I can't tell you about TMC because I work for Watkins Shepard but... I do know that after your 10 day orientation You get the keys to a big red truck and it does not come equipped with a trainer!!! You start earning full pay right away. The Santa Fe Springs terminal in Los Angeles has many Latinos working there and maybe recruiting could give you a person to speak to in your native language.

Hey Nero,

Ahh... decisions. When I was standing at the crossroads, I was looking at exactly the same thing you are now: TMC or W/S.

TMC is dedicated flat bed. W/S has both. You could start with W/S pulling a dry van and then switch to flat bed after your 90 day probationary period.

W/S and TMC have very different pay plans. If I am correct, TMC pays based on the value of the load. There are plenty of TMC drivers here on the board, so they can tell you more than me. W/S pays on actual (or nearly actual miles) so the earning potential is somewhat more consistent. W/S also pays the same, whether deadhead or empty, so that is a big plus.

And also, like it's been said already. You do well in W/S orientation, they toss you the keys and send you on your merry way, minus a trainer.

Hope that helps!

Clint

Nero, I heard some nasty stuff yesterday from a friend who works in the Deportation office in Washington DC about TMC. Not trying to start any rumors or piss anyone off, but there was more to the DOT inspection than just log problems. Deportation was called in and took out about 100 workers who were illegally here in the US from Mexico, Salvador and other places from Central America that TMC was employing at the headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa. None were known to be drivers for them, just yard workers. My advice, better be legal with plenty of credentials to prove it because Deportation is watching them like a hawk right now.

Golds, I have no bone to pick with TMC. I have never worked there so it doesn't bother me at all what they do. I was just talking with the person and happened to casually mention that I had looked at TMC to work for recently while we were talking about our jobs. They looked at me and asked if it was because of what happened as to why I did not go to work for them. I told them no that I had made my own decision before DOT came in on them. They told me it was more than DOT, they were also busted for illegals. This buddy does not lie, we were both in Cub Scouts all the way to Boy Scouts where both of us are Eagles, we have been taught not to lie.

Mr. Ford,
What you said MAY be true (I don't KNOW) BUT..... a HUNDRED, employees??? I don't think that many groundskeepers exist at companies 5 times TMC's size. lol

flatbedder, my first week went WELL!!!! As luck would have it, I got a 2007 Peterbilt 379 !!! Awesome truck. I'm home now with the truck and have my first load on it now and will deliver tomorrow AM in CT.

Thanks for asking!

Good luck Flatbed Fred.

Go slow. Watch your mirrors!

More than likely we will run into each other as I end up in New England fairly often. I will listen for the rare TMC driver with a New York accent. :)

That IS odd joker. Maybe one or two were drivers, buddy just said he didn't know of any that were but it was possible if they happened to be in Des Moines when Deportation showed up. Hopefully things start getting better for TMC, especially for the drivers who are hanging out here on CAD. Ya'll are a good bunch.
