I've heard many stories from many drivers on this subject. What is the toughest city in America to navigate your tractor & trailer through? I'm talking everything, like: Traffic, lack of truck routes, narrow roads and low overhead clearences.

I don't know about all that.. At least LA is FLAT! I used to deliver tires in and around SF. The Sear store up on the top Geary Blvd was no fun, but the deliveries in the hilly sections of the city really sucked and were no fun at all! Of course unloading was sorta like rolling the tires out of a lifted dump truck! :P :lol: |

That's my problem with that city also. Then you have to worry about trolley cars and their wires. Those wires hang very low. I have to double park to get my cars off and so forth. There also doing alot of construction near the ballpark. What a mess. |

| Never been there but New York. It's why companies are paying drivers extra just to go there. Don't see that with other cities. |

I think it's because of the congestion, right ? they should pay you extra for all the lost time in Chicago to. |

| can,t speak about USA but london,rome and paris can all be bad. suppose any big city is. also old cities with very narrow roads such as bath,winchester. there,s some roads over here between towns that have length restrictions due to severity of turns on road(fishguard to cardigan has a forty foot restriction,i have to drive twenty miles in wrong direction to avoid it :cry: ) american roads probably pose unique challenges? where else on earth would they come at you from twelve or thirteen lanes all at once :roll: |

I'm suprised nobody mentioned Washington DC.
Its like a really bad combination of Mr. Toads Wild Ride and bumper cars. |

That's because DC really isn't that bad unless you come thru at the wrong time. In the morning, do not go any direction that leads to the Beltway around DC between 6am and 9am. In the afternoon/evening, do not go near the Beltway or try to go away from it between 2pm and 7pm. On Friday's, take Rt 301 to the East or go West via Rt 17 to 29 to 66 to 81 and go around. If you hear there is a wreck tying up any lane, climb back in the sleeper and go to sleep or take one of the 2 detours.
We have the 5th worst traffic in the country, last year it was 3rd worst and gaining on LA and New York. The traffic is not bad all day and night like LA and New York.
As far as the city of DC itself, the streets are tough to get around with all the Homeland security in place. You look on a map and the street is there but it's either one way or it's cordoned off by police. Forget getting off 295 once within the city limits and trying to get back on heading the other way if you miss your exit, there is no re-entrance ramp for you because your usually dropping off onto a one way street. You have to work your way around a few blocks to get back where you can get on the entrance ramp for the opposite direction while avoiding low trees, hidden stoplights(hide them in the trees to the side of the street, not overhead) and the crackheads who want a smoke or money. |

Ok here is my experience...
NYC- as long as you get to and across the GB between 10pm-4 am it is a breeze. Otherwise traffic sux.
DC- Construction on the east side is a pain in the neck same time as above. NEVER try DC on the holidays. From the bride to the sb scale took me around 6 hrs on Easter last year and the year before.
LA- too many ppl. But it usually is moving.
Detriot- I try not to go. But if I do it has always been at nite.
Pittsburg- I agree with everyone else.
Boston- NO COMMENT
Chicago- Anything here is a pain. Construction everywhere and along with the tolls make it congested anytime of the day. Good thing is they take EZPASS now.
The one place noobody has mentioned and I am surprised is
Atlanta- Way to many ppl. Lived there for 10 yrs. Before CDL. Atlanta ppl will come from three lanes away and cut everyone off just to get to there xt. From 5 am to 10 am STAY AWAY from 285 or anything going into Atl. From 3-7 Stay away from anything leaving. The speed limit on I-285 is 55. Next time you get there try to go it and you WILL be mowed over. There is a saying in Atlanta. " If you get thru it and didn't see at least one wreck is was a good day". O and by the way comericial traffic has to go on 285. Unless you are loading or unloading inside the perimeter don't go. It is a $500 ticket and 3 points on your CDL and they will turn you around if you are caught.
