I told them I wouldn't buy a truck from them. No way was I going to give them any sales commission. I went into the sales building and got the Manafer and told him what had happened and how I felt. He apoligized profusely. We say goodbye and started to leave. By the time we got to our truck we could see the Manager had the 2 men in front of him and he was tearing a strip off of both of them.
Mapleleaf, good for you! You handled yourself with great dignity and class. Maybe someday, we can hope men will drop their great caveman clubs, evolve a little bit and smarten up to the realization that women are out there... doing the job that they're doing, making the money that they're making, and succeeding! While I am not a driver, I do work in the trucking industry and when male drivers approach me, they think they're going to address me like they do your average truck stop waitress or lot lizzard. Uh... no. I don't think so!

Don't ever spend your hard earned money or waste your valuable time on anyone who won't treat you for what you are... a professional driver!

    Kudos to you.

Good 4 you; but screw buyin' anything from them- I'd go buy me a truck from the next place down, and then drive it through their lot and say "This is whatcha get for pizzin me off!"

Thanks Nikov & Shyy. I appreciate your support and comments. Actually I did go elsewhere to buy my truck. I sent a short but informative letter to the manager of that truck dealership telling him I had purchased elsewhere and that I've told others about my experience with his dealership. Got a reply back from him apoligizing for their actions and that he had reprimanded them. Told me if in any way in the future he could be of service to me he'd do his best to see I was satisfied. Interesting to see he replied to my letter. Drive safe everyone.

Did you know that there are only about 2000 women drivers in Canada, I read that the other day

I have seen the women drivers who have the big egos, like they have to prove something to all the guys, and the one that feel like they are something special because they are female and driving a truck, I mean it is not something these guys haven't seen before, sure there are some who feel that the womans place is at home, but you can't go around trying to change everyone's mind, I just ignore it.

I have never felt the need to have to prove myself, I am not out here to prove anything for women, I don't think of myself as a "woman driver", like joettanne said, I am just a person doing a job

Although I do admire the hard working women like myself and the other women on this board who are out here just trying to make a living, because it is not the easiest way to make a living

I think I didn't express myself very well. I didn't mean "prove myself" in the sense you speak of above. I have nothing to "prove", I've been at this far too long. I meant as far as "some" men thinking because I am female I should be "barefoot, pregnant & in the kitchen" AND because I am little and blonde...

For instance... the company I work for now, and believe me this is TRULY the BEST job I have ever had!... Anyway, they have been in business since 1946, they have never had a woman driver before, let alone a woman o/o, so needless to say, there was some reluctance on their part. Just no previous experience to base a decision on. Have been told several times that they made the right decision & asked if I knew any other women looking for work

That's all there are! Only 2000 women drivers in all of Canada! No wonder I never see anything but men! LOL

Wildkat: I'll put an application into your company! 28 years plus some as a professional driver. Not on long haul though, mostly local.

Great!!! Look forward to meeting with you IRL! Let me know when you get out here.

We do what would be termed as regional, not long not short. Owner/ops here do the longer stuff, company driver's do the 8-10 hour runs.

Thanks again wildkat for the info. I'm still considering my options. Will have a lot of decision making to do. Moving, etc. I will keep in touch.

I still can't believe that there are only 2000 women drivers in Canada!

Well I think is a damned sight more than when I started trucking back in 1980! I can recall counting the number of women drivers out there on the fingers of one hand and having fingers left over

What you can do is get a company to bring you out & try out the job & make your decision after. Many companies now will pay ALL moving expenses & living expenses just to get you here!

sorry I just realized I made a typo, the number was about 7000 women drivers while there are about 256,000 male drivers in Canada, women make up less then 3% of all drivers in Canada, read it in one of the Canadian trucking papers

Yes Shawnee, I think I found the same article you did. But still 7000 is so few!

It would be nice to see more women out there.

EO, have been at this for 27 years now, am also an owner operator. Sometimes I HATE trucks! BUT, on the whole I love this industry, it has been good to me.

Just remember ATTITUDE is everything! And with this job (life) you are what you are! Most of all I am a PROFESSIONAL. This is what I DO, this is what I AM!

There are a lot of men that think it is just great that I am driving a truck. They have no problem with it and respect me for my experience and knowledge. Heck, some even ask me for my opinion on problems or help. They see me as a driver, like themselves. So to them, I tip my hat!

BUT! There are also some that just can't handle a WOMAN doing the same job as them! To them; Get over it, it's the year 2007!
