Something you might want to look into is, go to your local unemployment office and ask them about training programs. I know in the state of Indiana we have a program called Work One and with that you fill out some paper work do some research on some different school and possible get the state to pay for your schooling or part of it to were you don't have to pay it back. Different schools take different amounts of time. Also check if it is a creditable school or just a CDL mill (talk to some different companies or drivers to find out things like that), and talk to the schools as well see what type of feeling you get from them. Remember though the person you talk to in the school office is just a recruiter like any other so they say what they think you want to hear sometimes. Use your gut feeling about that take what they say with a gain of salt and if it sounds to good to be true it probably is. The school I went to was three weeks long.

I have been driving for almost 2 years all but five months of it has been solo. Let me tell you that five months was the longest five months of my life. Someone I knew very well and cared for trained me but a truck that size was just to small for the two of us we did much better after I was in my own truck.

Something on the safety side is when I get out of my truck I always have my keys in my hand with my truck key positioned to were it sticks out in between my figures, and my head is always up and looking around taking note of everyone around me. Even if you have your hands in your pocket with the keys laced like that if someone tries something that long truck key in the eye or throat might have them taking a second thought of what they were going to do. Of course it is a better thought not to get that close to a situation if you don't have to.

Remember you are who you are and carry your self with pride of everything you have done to be who you are. Enjoy who you are and what you do and how you act and just say to yourself skip them if they don't like it. Or at least that is how I try to carry myself.

I am 26 and a female tanker so I here all the time of how I don't belong out here and how I am taking some man's job away. But you know what a man had this job before I did and if he would have done it right I wouldn't have it. I also try to keep in mind (during what few bad days I have) Why I started doing this in the first place, and everyone has their own reason. But I will tell you what thinking of being able to take care of me and my daughter is enough to get me through just about anything that comes my way. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and bull-dose through the not so nice stuff to get to the great stuff.
Don't get me wrong I love being a solo driver there are or course a few head-aches with the job but any job will have it. But at least while your in your truck the not so nice people have a volume control on them, so you don't have to listen to them.

I wish everyone the best, and may you all find what makes you happy and have the strength to hold onto it.

oh and one more thing sorry if I ran on a bit but with what I do there aren't to many women to talk to about this stuff and most of the people I talk to know everything and have done everything or darn near close to it.

I would have to take a small puppy with me. They would solve the loneliness issue and help with safety too!!!

That and that I should be at home taking care of my family not out here. My response to that is that if more men took care of the families they help create maybe some of us wouldn't have to be out here and would be able to do that. Not that I think I could actually put myself in a position to have to depend on a man for much of anything. The only man in my life that hasn't let me down is my Dad (well that and a few other men in my family).

I also I have heard that since I am willing to sit in this drivers set I should also be willing to jump from sleeper to sleeper or be willing to help the other drivers stay awake by giving hooter shots.

What class right. I have heard a lot of things out here that I couldn't believe I was hearing. Or like what am I doing out here I don't look like I need to be driving a truck. Now tell me what does someone who needs to drive a truck look like.

I swear I am surprised some of these guys can walk up right with out dragging their knuckles on the ground. All though I must admit sometimes I may be a little more out spoken than what I should be. But I am who I am and I make no apologies for that I have been through hell and back to be the person I am, and I am proud of who I have become and the fact that nothing from my past has beaten me down.

It is sad but there are a lot of women drivers who act like this, lot lizards on wheels I call them and they are an embarrassment to this industry

I have worked damn hard for everything I have, I have always owned my own trucks, I run my own business and I take pride in my truck and everything that I have worked for, I have a lot more respect for myself than to be known as the idiot woman who flashes everybody, I have been treated fairly well by male drivers because I don't act like a floozy,

These women are just a joke to the guys something for them to laugh at and it is too bad that all women drivers have a bad name because of ****s like these

I do hope that you do not think that I act that way. Trust me I do not. I may be a little boisterous but as far as acting like that I do not.

I've ridden along with my husband plenty over the years, but have never been out there alone... I love the lifestyle, and I am anxious to get going on the road! But a bit nervous about the being alone thing!
I have been an owner/operator for 27 years and have trucked all over North America BY MYSELF. I truthfully don't like people enough to spend that much time with anyone! LOL

I have never felt threatened by any place I have ever traveled, I currently run in the Canadian Arctic, where there are almost no women at all.

It totally depends on your attitude and the way you act on the road. If you act like a pro, you will be treated like one! I have never been "come on" to, or bothered in anyway "out there". I met my husband of 10 years on the job, he is a heavy equipment operator & thinks what I do is awsome.

After 27 years I think I have damned near seen it all...Some of the "women" out here simply disgust me...but then I am pretty old fashioned.

I used to take my cat with me when I ran long haul, she was an endless source of entertainment & company. She made a better watch dog than most dogs cause she was quiet. If somebody came too close to my truck when I was sleeping she would climb up & gently pull my hair till I woke up then LOOK out the window to show me something was up. I was also convinced she KNEW the hours of serv ice regulations better than I did. If I got to going to hard she would pester me until I stopped, seemed she had some concept of time, cause sometimes there was no place to stop at that particular moment & I would tell her "soon" and she would go sit on the jump seat for bout 1/2 hour & if I still didn't stop, well she would pester again. Like she was saying you said "SOON" LOL

I can recall one time we were in Kentucky I believe & it was very hot so I stopped to buy an ice cream cone...they we were...me licking one side of the cone & her on my lap licking the other...caused quite a stir on the radio!

I miss her greatly when I am on the road now, but sh'e getting older now & doesn't like the getting in & out of the truck anymore. She is quite content to just stay at home now and be here when I get back.

was reading the whole 4 pages worth of posts..someone on page 1 (I believe it was, said something about carrying a squirt gun loaded with soap). That's a good idea..or another thing is take a spray bottle..fill it up with some water and put some vingar in that..squirt that in the person's eyes. that will hurt like heck. works like pace lol.

You are absolutly right, I have always said that if you come out here on the road and act like a floozy and talk that way on the cb you will be treated like a floozy. I have been treated pretty well, all the guys that I work with treat me just like one of the guys

From what I have seen, alot of the women who complain that they get harrassed on the road bring it on themselves, They are the ones who are out there bringing attention to themselves, they are the ones who are on the cb radio acting stupid and they wonder why they recieve negative comments from male drivers. Instead of just ignoring it, they add fuel to the fire by responding to it.

Thanks, she rode with me steady for 6 years. I miss her still when I am away. But, fortunately, I am not gone for as long as I used to be, now that the ice roads are closing I am usually home on the weekends. She doesn't like the getting in & out anymore, it scares her. So for her sake, she stays at home now. Got her a companion (kitten) & she seems happier that way.
