I understand to concept, am just not sure why they call it forced...afterall it is what we are HIRED to do is it not?

And...up here, well it's an unknown concept, we understand that if we are closer to the p/u than anyone else, we would be chosen to p/u the load...like duhhh. It's what we are paid to do. Sorry I just DON'T get what the kafuffle is all about... :?

I see what you are saying, the point being most dispatchers aren't good planners and you tend to get things at the last minute, where as if you declined, maybe they'd get better at planning instead of making the driver look like the fool.

I'll say! I've certainly seen my share over the years (27). But, then I MUST also add, that I do have a good one now. He's really got his act together & very seldom doesn't have his trucks & loads well planned. His back up on the other hand could not find his ***** with both hands & a map!!!

Medway is just north of Dayton, everything you need is in Huber Hts, next exit west from Medway. There class and training is pretty good, you get out what you put in. You will learn on automatics, they dont want you to know the art of shifting a truck. Therefore you will have to stay with them, find someone to teach you to shift if you dont already know how. Good Luck.

Ahhh, I can see people coming into automatics like ppl coming into computers, kicking and screaming....

There will be a day when thats all there are. You know, no matter what ppl think, a computer can shift more efficiently then a human...and save fuel at the same time! Just somethin to think about... :?

Well, I find that somewhat insulting to say the least....MY truck has 18 gears, I get 6.2 mpg average...I pull Rocky Mountain doubles 98% of the time & gross out at 53,500 KG (over 100,000 lbs)..don't tell me I don't know how to shift for fuel economy. BTW I have a 550 tein turbo'd Cat in my truck...I don't know ANYBODY who gets that kind of fuel economy with an AUTOMATIC!!! It's a proven fact that a standard transmission gets better fuel economy than an automatic any day of the week.

You might say that now, but automatics are still in their infantsy stage and as fuel prices get higher, technology WILL get better. Pilots used to say they could land better too! But commercial airlines are all now computer landed. Like I said, Ppl will go out kicking and screaming...and btw 53,500KG = 117,947.2lbs

I grew up on both systems (metric & imperial) so I KNOW exactly how much weight it is, did you have to look it up?

It is a courtesy converversion for many who DON'T know what it is.

Hmmm..me thinks I just figured out exactly WHAT you are! :P

wildkat, while I vehemently support your opinion that standards are better, our autos DO get better mileage than our standards. Why? Could it be another reason? Shoot I dunno. The standards have 500's and the autos 515 (not set at 515!) Our few Mercedes with the autos have even better mileage.
Better fuel mileage..but more break downs. Pieces of crap!!

Beats me Lady, BUT I do believe whole heartedly that the WAY in which one drives has a HUGE impact on fuel economy not matter what you drive. I have heard from a few of our company drivers who drive auto's that just what you say...spend far too much time on the side of the road and way less time rolling.

I just have a hard time with the concept, especially with all the years I spent in the mountains with a super B. Scary thought!

Auto's verses Standard. Mm? :? I haul tanker, full bore. I like the standard. I think the companies go to the auto's because of inexperienced drivers. As far as fuel economy, I still say a standard driven properly will do better.

I know a man that bought a brand new school bus with an auto trans. The computer screwed up and miss-shifted the transmission and the bus came to a gear grinding stop on the road.

Maybe some time in the distant future, there will be no standard transmissions left. By that time I will be retired.

But for now, I'd rather pick my own gears.

Find me an auto that gets better fuel mileage than a standard and you can color me shocked. Now an auto that can shift better than a standard is believeable.

I have driven both automatics (auto-shift) and straight shift. I have always gotten better fuel economy with the straight shift. As I recall, I got about .4 mpg less on the auto shift than the straight. Even in cars, you will get more mpg with a straight shift than an automatic. I prefer to have the straight shift, especially when in mountains. They still have some bugs to work out of them. I do love them in very heavy stop and go traffic. It can sure save the leg. But, all things considered equal, I will take the straight shift. At some point, we will all likely be driving some sort of automatic in our trucks.
