    Default aircard with GPS...hmmm, interesting!

was doing research on aircards and i found this...sounds very interesting, doesnt it. Does anyone out there actually have this particular card? and if so, how does it work?? thanks

    AirCardŽ 595U by Sierra Wireless

    Key Features:
    Web, email capable
    GPS enabled
    Broadband speeds where available

    - Users can take advantage of Sprint Location Services to conduct a "locate and search" inquiry. Using the GPS chipset embedded in the device, users can plot their current location on a map and then search for nearby points of interest such as gas stations, banks or restaurants. Users can also enter their own custom point of interest query.

I have this air card. There is a GPS set up in this card. here's how it works. Once connected, you can use the GPS settings to find local services. It does NOT work like a stand alone GPS unit.

Can you use the GPS portion of it with other apps on the computer, such as MS Streets & Trips?

I'll be ordering a new USB aircard tomorrow and am just wondering about it. Of course, it's no big deal since I already have a GPS receiver. I'd just like to free up a USB port.

I installed my 597U today and guess what - it has a true GPS receiver in it. I noticed that when the thing was setting up that it added an NMEA port. So, I loaded up Streets & Trips, set it to use that port and boom - dead on.

You just have to enable it in the settings, plus start it in the GPS section of the Sprint window.

The way I understand it, with that model card, you can't use the internet while using gps and vice versa. Supposedly, only the U727 can do that, at least from Sprint rep.

Yes, I can use the GPS/Internet at the same time with the 595u. The only thing is that you have to run the Sprint Connection Manager software for it to be enabled.

Old thread, but I'll second that it works while browsing the web. In fact, I've had my webcam streaming live video while DeLorme was giving me a nice display of exactly where I was, going down the highway. The one in the 595U is quite accurate. My new phone has a better GPS than my old phone, and it even has the option to enable NMEA output of the GPS over bluetooth OR USB, so I don't even have to run a cord to the laptop for my GPS.

There are some kinks to the 595u's GPS. I have one, and yes it will work with any program that is made for GPS use. However it can tend to give you a delayed signal, and is not very accurate for directional use, at least it never was for me.
