Mine is mounted on the passenger side. They make auto laptop mounts for that (just do a google search), although I made mine out of a $50 metal music stand cut down to size.

You might be able to find a weatherproof gps receiver. I'm sure they make them. Also, if the cable is too short, get a usb extension cable so that the end isn't near the door jamb. You could weatherproof the connector (for the extension cable) with some heat-shrink tubing and a few wraps of electrical tape.

I dont understand why this program doesnt have auto reroute like my old gps..

That's my problem - it doesn't pick up a decent signal on the dash, so I have it mounted outside. I have a knack for getting the USB port stuck in the door jamb, thereby crushing it.

If you get a GPS receiver with the new SIRF Star III chipset you should be able to get a strong satellite signal no matter where you put it. I had mine plugged directly into my USB port on my laptop and was not even using the cable until after three months of shaking on the road my USB port eventually got loosened and started to give me errors. After tightening the USB port back up again so it works properly again, I started using the cable instead to plug it into the laptop since the cable is much lighter than the receiver and so now I just throw the GPS receiver up on the dash, but it doesn’t matter where I put it inside the cab, because with the new SIRF star III chipset it is sensitive enough to pick up a strong signal no matter where I put it, inside, outside, on the floor, on the seat, on the back bunks, on the dash, anywhere and everywhere.

If you want to save money, just buy the top for the laptop and go down to your local hardware store and pick up the remainder of the parts for 10 or 12 dollars. Remove the front inside bolt of the passenger seat, place the floor flange of the mount between the seat and the floor and tighten the bolt back up.

Works just great. It’s what I have been using for more than a year now and it cost me a small fraction of the price of what one of those cybertrucker or jottodesk stands cost and works just as well.

I also rigged mine up with a quick connect near the floor flange, so that I can easily remove the upper portion of the stand without having to go through the trouble of backing out the floor flange every time I need to move it.

this is the one i use. It's on the dash of my columbia, even still with a drop visor on a pete, the sirf star III chip should still pick up a signal. it's weather proof and is even magnetic.

Manufactuer is Holoux. Bought it just about 2 years ago on ebay for $70 w/shipping.
