    Default rebuild turbo?

My turbo is leaking oil on the fresh air side. Its a Holset on a Cummins ISX. I was quoted almost $2600 exchange for a new turbo.

Can the turbo be opened up and new bearings/seals be installed or do I have to go new?

Was that quote for a new turbo or a recon? You probably could get a recon for less. Another option worth considering is locating a used truck parts dealer in your area and picking up on a decent used turbo. They are usually tested to make sure they are good and you can get them for a reasonable price. Just use your old turbo to cover the core charge.

$2600 may not be too bad, depending on what part of the country you're in. I see ISX turbos for $2000 exchange on flea-bay (and who knows who re-built them). One may be able to source parts for a re-build, if you look long enough. Suppose there's impeller damage or machine work needed, how many days work do you want to miss while it's being sorted out? An exchange unit will come with a warranty, a box of parts won't.

$2600 was a quote from Cummins in Winnipeg. I didn't check any dealers prices yet, but they'd probably be close. Anyone try the turbo from PDI diesel? Trouble is one has to buy their manifold too. I may just look at used. Thanks.

I am totally agree with him. An exchange unit will come with a warranty.

That quote may be from Cummins, but it is crucial to know if that was for a new turbo or a recon. Recons would come with warranty and should be cheaper than what you were quoted. And was that the after core trade in price? If so, ouch!

I'm fairly sure that was for new, and it was with core trade. Thanks, I'll look at recon. For now I'm just adding a jug of oil every 5000 miles and probably gumming up my air to air too. Good thing I stay out of CA.
