Transmission Swap?

I have a 1997 Kenworth W900L, with a 3206E cat. I bought the truck 2 years ago and the transmission went out last week. I called Kenworth to verify what transmission came in the truck from the factory and apparently before I bought the truck someone had swapped the factory RTO16915 for a RTX15710C. I want to go ahead and put the correct trans back into the truck but I'm wondering if the clutch, bell housing, and yoke are going to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yep just about any trans will bolt right up, might as well throw in a new clutch while its out

How bout the yoke? Do you have any idea if the shaft size ans splines will be the same?

Oh, if it were only that simple Maniac.

The bell housing is almost certainly the same.

The input shaft is probably the same as far as fitting in your truck goes.

The rear yoke you currently have may or may not fit. The two transmissions you are listing have different gear designs so the output shaft is possibly different. Also the one you are taking out is a 10 speed which has a very short rear box and the RTO is a 15 speed which has an extended rear box so you would probably have to shorten the drive shaft. Also the 15 speed will require a different shift knob.

You also need to consider the top cover and shift stick that you have. They may or may not work.

You should check the specs on a PTO if you are using one.

You should also find out if the retailer will accept a 10 speed as a core for the 15 speed. It's going to depend on the popularity of each.

This will help you know what the differences are between the two transmissions.

Thank you both first of all. I was just looking at a Eaton Fuller parts # reference. The bell housings and the input shaft part numbers match but the main shaft (tail shaft) numbers are different, so it's hard to say if the back end of the shaft where the yoke goes on is going to be different or not. The reason this poses a problem is that Im not sure if I'll be able to get a yoke for the 15 speed that will work with my current size u-joints. I looked into a reman rto16915 and about the best price I could find was $3,000, plus a $2,500 core. They would only give me $1,00 for my core. Doing a little more shopping around I found a used one with 450,000 miles, dynoed, and inspected for $1,500. It has a 1 year warrant, so I figure if I take the time to get it put in there, about a year from now I'll just pull it out and I'll have my $2,500 core.

Getting a yoke that will work shouldn't be a problem. They make just about every size and spline for every size u-joint.

I would make sure the top cover is going to work though. The used Trans may come with the top cover but a reman won't.

They're probably going to want a core with the used one also.
