the local shop, that I may use, say's aftermarket kit's are a lot less expensive & he has never had a problem out of them. he use's what ever the customer want's. if I can save a few hundred buying aftermarket, should I ? I had the bottom 1/2 done 100,000 miles ago & all 6 injectors done 130,000 miles ago. was looking at just putting in ring's sleeve's,pistons, cam, cam bearing's & head resurface. does this make sense ?

...so long as you use brand name parts; clevite, perfect circle, federal mogul, etc..

    Default Clevite

I have used Clevite many times and have never had any problems. At one time Clevite made Cummins parts under contract for them. A Cummins engineer once told me they (Clevite) used thier lower end product for after market but I've used both and couldn't tell any difference. The head or heads are a different story, I would go with Cummins Re-con unless I knew of a reputable head repair shop.

I have for many years used Clevite parts in my rebuilds. I retired a truck a couple of years ago with an N-14 that was inframed with Clevite pistons, rings, liners and bearings. It has 1.2 million on the inframe.

2 piece pistons for the N-14 are not available in the aftermarket though. If they are in good shape, I re-use them and have never had a problem.

If you use an aftermarket head, I'd advise that you be sure that the rebuilder replaces at least the valve springs. Damn cheap insurance against dropping a valve.

I have a ser 60 det. I am going to try & make it to spring. over 1.3 mil. was quoted $6800 plus tax on inframe. includes resurfacing the head. I had asked about doing only the piston's,ring's, ring sleeves. the other stuff like mains & injectors were not done long ago. was quoted 2500 labor only, & for parts 24-2500 so if I can have done for about 5 grand I would be happy. I know all the parts have to be taken out & the labor would be the same reguardless. I can save on injectors at least.
