Default New Cylinder Head From Cat or Refurbish Old Head

I am replacing my cyclinder head on my 3406b! Can I get away with having my head refurbished or should I purchase another head from Cat! There is a $600.00 dollar different!

    Thanks

I would probably just have the old head refurbished.

So the refurbished head will be just as good as one from Cat! I figured that i was only paying for the name and warranty!

    Thanks GMAN

Well, i wouldn't trust anybody, to work on my kitty. BTW. If it will be refurbished by the CAT, it will have the same warranty as new...

Why are you replacing it? ...is the first question we need to ask.

The only difference is WHO has rebuilt the head. I would have it done locally, unless they ask you a question like; hmmmm, what did that head come off from?

Be certain that the difference in price is not because of work that DOESNT get done to the head locally; acid bath, valves, seats, seals, guides, springs, cups, pressure test, deck planing. This stuff has all been taken care of with the cat reman, how much does the local guy do it for if it needs machine work... is it all inclusive? is the price gonna grow after you get it there?

Well I did the bottom and the middle in December! I ran it hot an blew a head gasket, so I want to replace the top because I really dont know how many miles are on that head and I it needs to be reworked anyway! Am I crazy! Or if it not broke leave it alone?

Make sure it gets magnafluxed to check for cracks if it was run hot.

Better yet, just get a Cat reman head and be done with it.

    Why did it run hot?

Make sure the cause of the overheating is corrected before running the truck with the reman head, or you may be back to square one.
If you can't shift it smoothly, you shouldn't be driving it.
