Default Jost landing gear won't fully retract

What causes this? The legs don't seem bent. It just stops, doesn't slowly jam up.

Try disconnecting the crosshaft, that'll tell you which leg has the problem.
    You can't fix stupid......

I was told that. I'm not sure if it's binding, it just feels like a normal landing gear when it stops. Just stops about 4-5 inches short or so.

Unloaded, it's 9.5 inches from the ground fully retracted(as far as it will go anyways). Loaded is slightly less then 7.

The landing gear is raised and lowered by means of a threaded rod (acme threads) and a gear-driven nut (or a gear-driven rod and a stationary nut). If the trailer has been dropped on the landing gear, especially while loaded, the threads on the rod can get moved slightly. The threads in the nut also get damaged, but they all get moved over uniformly, while on the rod, it's only a section of thread the length of the nut. The transition from normal thread to the damaged area is where the problem is. The threads are mis-aligned from the rest and the nut doesn't want to cross over into the other area easily. It generally is not just one side or the other, but both. Most companies simply replace the landing gear, but if you are ambitious, you can take it apart and file the damaged area, thus reducing the strength of the threads in that area even more.

It could be a simple as that there is so much grease and grim in the top end of the landing gear, it cant go any higher.

I saw that in a set of landing legs I had.

Problem is, if you keep on putting pressure on them, they can break.

I am not sure landing gear is something a non-mechanic should work on. I would not even consider it. the shop does my work on something like this.
