    Default Air compressor

    I have to replace my air compressor today and my Detroit 12.7 500 hp.

    Any advice for someone who hasnt done this?

    Should be basic R&R, nothing too difficult to do.

    Don't forget to drain cooling and air systems, mark lines for re-installation.

    15mm for comp mounting bolts, you might find a long extension helpful to access the bolts on the back side. I think 8mm (12point) for fuel pump mounting bolts.

    It is often practical to remove the p/s pump (or cover, etc) from the front side of the gear housing for installation of the comp drive gear.

    Do not remove lines/hoses from fuel pump or power steering pump unless you have to.

    ...good time to do the airdryer and governor as well.

    It is a good idea to go ahead and replace your air dryer filter at the same time. I know it is downstream but maybe as the compressor went bad it could have sent some nasties down to the filter.

    Also look for carbon build-up inside the end of the stainless air line at the compressor. If it's gunked up try and get it cleaned out.
