In automatic International, what does the "Econ" button do?

In my 5-speed automatic transmission International (2006), right on the gear shifter underneath the button you have to press to get it to shift gears, is a button that when I press it, a 'Econ' light comes up on the dash. I'm sure it stands for 'Econonmy'. But I can't tell a difference in the way the truck shifts gears, the way it accelerates, or the engine RPMs at road speeds. What exactly does this button do? (if anything)?

Surely someone knows... They wouldn't have put it there for nothing.....

I'm sure it has to do with when the transmission shifts. Lots of cars have the same switch and will cause the transmission to shift a lot sooner when in economy mode.

You can do a simple experiment.

Get on flat ground and hold your foot on the peddle and keep steady and record at what MPH it shifts for each gear until in the highest gear.

Then flip the switch and do it again.
