Black smoke and less power. Cost to repair depends on the make, mostly due to how hard it is to get into. Mine was replaced under warranty, so I don't know that cost. My guess is $1000-$2000.
Thanks no_worries  . This is now like 2 months with this problem. As the driver put it, it has a bad case of the hiccups. It happens more when pulling a load.
I've had the turbo actuator replaced and that fixed it for a bit. Then the VNT valve calibrated and then that helped.
Now I'm being told I need a new VPOD and EGR Valve. Price for all of that is $1600.
I guess when you are crusing along it is fine, but pulling up a hill or when you slow down it starts bucking.
Hope it gets fixed this time; and not just have parts changed.
While their in there, make sure they check the EGR cooler for cracks or leaks. That can cause the symptoms you've described.
Black amoke, poorer mileage and a loss of power. It will not strand you.
Figure 700 ish for the valve and 2 - 2.5 hours labor unless it is a Volvo chassis - then all bets are off on the labor.

This has been a royal pain in the a**. Mechanic got parts changing happy and started changing everything: EGR Valve, Delta P something or other, Charge Air Cooler.
I don't know if it's fixed cause sometimes it only does it under a load but I haven't picked it up yet cause everytime they tell me it's done I take it for a test ride and the check engine light comes on. Some error code about EGR boost. I think they need to change the EGR Cooler too.
The EGR temp sensor or something like that gave 47 high temp codes in 3 days. That is done but like I said the light keeps coming on.
Apparently the engine is out of warranty but after some digging around I think they made a mistake and there should be a warranty left. Everytime they lift their eyes I am in the doorway reminding them they need to fix this warranty issue.
while not the most familiar with the laws re: trucks, i do believe that by law, u cannot just remove it...as i would reccomend in a car(unless of course u have emmisions testing where u live) cars are better off without them
although to be honest, i wasnt aware trucks even had egr valves
