    Default International 4900 air conditioning filter???

    We have a year 2000 International 4900 530E that when you turn on the air conditioner, although the air is cold, very very little comes out. Does it have an air conditioning filter, or is it just the regular air filter that would have something to do with this? If it does have an A/C filter, where?? I looked under the hood, but I can't find it. We have a 2006 International 4200 that has an A/C filter that is on the passenger side under the hood, but it's not there in the 4900. :?:

    That's the same cab as the S models we have at work, so it should have the same setup.

    Here's the method I use:

    Take off the dash panel on the right (passenger) side in order to access the screws on the upper part of the HVAC unit cover. Then take off the cover on the HVAC unit (below the dashboard).

    You will see a thin fiberglass filter (similar to that stuff that home furnace filters are made of). You'll have to grasp the end of that filter with long nose pliers and pull it out of the slot it resides in next to the heater core.

    Wash out the filter with soap and water, set it aside and let it dry.

    Now comes the fun part!

    I use a thin plastic bristled brush to reach in thru the slot where the filter goes and brush the dirt off the heater core. Why clean the heater core when you have an AC problem you may ask? Because the air first goes thru the filter, then thru the heater core (which is not receiving hot water when in AC mode), then thru the AC evaporator, and finally thru the ductwork to the cab.

    After you've CAREFULLY brushed the heater core clean, turn the HVAC fan on high. Massive quantities of dust will be expelled from the system, it's very messy. While the fan is running on high, use a compressed air blow gun to blow out any remaining dust in the HVAC unit, this dust will also be expelled thru the outlets into the cab.

    Once you've got it all cleaned out, reinstall the filter, replace the HVAC unit cover and reassemble the dash board.

    Now use the air blow gun to blow all that expelled dust and dirt out of the cab.

    You should notice a dramatic improvement in air flow.

    Also check to see if a previous owner may have installed an aftermarket cowl air filter in the HVAC air intake just below the center of the windshield, if so, that could be clogged as well.
    If you can't shift it smoothly, you shouldn't be driving it.
