    Default Dumb Rookie Question

I know that the only dumb question is the one that is noit asked.......however, I still feel dumb asking this. I never really paid attention until now, but I remember that when my trainer would idle his truck he set the cruise so that the RPM's were at 1,000. I have also noticed that it seems a lot of drivers idle their trucks high. Why is that???

My truck idles at about 600-700 normal. I was just curious why some idle high. Is there a purpose for it?

I have to idle mine at 1000 or the a/c wont cool, this seems to be the norm with older petes

maybe I am lucky then because my idles normal at about 600-700 and the A/C gets so cold I have to put it on low

we have 5 2000 petes and they all have to idle at 1000 to get it to cool. I guess you got the only good one

Well I was/am just curious as to why drivers do it......also want to make sure I am not doing any harm by letting it idle at the "normal" range

If it was -20f or lower I'd idle it higher but that's the exception and not the rule

running a large diesel engine at low idle speed causes low combustion chamber temps, which limits the engines ability to burn the injected fuel

this unburnt fuel leaves the combustion chamber and condenses/drops out of the exhaust flow and ends up dripping from exhaust manifolds and turbo down pipes, etc ..... ie - slobber

this unburnt fuel also passes the piston rings and causes cylinder glazing which generally requires engine tear-down to correct

If you look in the manual that came with the truck, odds are you will find instructions to the effect of not idling for more than five minutes, because low combustion chamber temperatures can cause a laundry list of problems.

They can, too. My old truck, I had no cruise, and no working manual throttle knob (that's a fun story in of itself) so I had to idle it at idle all night, for years. It got to where I would blow plumes of oil out the stack in the morning, because it was slobbering so much oil past the rings.

belive it or not, that makes perfect sense......from now on when I idle, I'll get the RPM's up a little higher........Thanks for the info everyone!!!

In the old days we had a knob that you pulled out and then the knob turned to get the idle up to where you wanted it

No, that was back when trucks could run with the ignition turned off.

I limped home a long way one night running my headlights off the battery, when my alternator took a dump. I'll never do that again.

You remember when the Truck stops sold that gizmo that attached to the Steering wheel(I think it went to the steering wheel) and had a rod with a tip that went to your Pedal and you set the Idle by adjusting a Nut? :P

    Good Ole days lmao
